Artists risk misdemeanor charges for displaying art in front of Forever 21 on Pacific Avenue after being arrested on Thursday.

On Thursday, August 20, 2015 -- Joff Jones and Alex Skelton were arrested on Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz in front of Forever 21 for displaying their artwork.

On Sunday they returned dressed in Colonial dress with a display of their artwork and a display of the First Amendment.

"My art expresses my social, religious, and existential views. My first amendment guarantees me the right to express that in a public space. my friend Alex and I were arrested yesterday for exercising these rights. Be downtown on Saturday at 12:00pm to see part two. Stand up for your rights!!!"

"I guess the police don't want to arrest men who are dressed as George Washington and Ben Franklin. We were promised that they would arrest us, and confiscate all of our art next time we came out. Today will be trial number 2. Wish me luck."

He made some good points, but when he described Santa Cruz as "this peaceful little town that has over reacted to fear", I laughed and walked away.

What fantasy town does he live in? Certainly not Santa Cruz. We have one of the 6 highest crime rates for a town of our population in the country. We had a heinous murder committed last month at....wait for it....a subsidized artists collective~~! And we have a growing heroin and meth problem; much of it afflicting the homeless that hang on the mall and the nearby San Lorenzo Park and levee. The same location where the move along law he's protesting exists, and a causal factor of its existence.

He can have his own opinion, but not his own facts. And the facts don't match the recreated history he's spinning.
by TBSC exploits tragedies
The true creeps of Santa Cruz repeatedly used the name of a woman murdered downtown in 2012 to advance their fascist political program of "move alongs" and "stay aways", and very predictably they are now using the name of a murdered 8 year old for the same purposes.

It's no coincidence that the Tannery Artists left Take Back Santa Cruz out of the full-page 'thank you' ad to first responders they published in the Good Times following the murder there.

We need to force street artists off of Pacific because there are meth users in Santa Cruz? Talk about spin. I am not laughing.

Keep Santa Cruz artistic!

Support downtown artists!

Stop the TBSC propaganda!

Noah, a witness and friend of the two artists, spoke on Free Radio Santa Cruz today about 50 minutes into the audio file archived at http://radiolibre.org/brb/brb150823.mp3 .

In reply to "TBSC exploits":

You're comparison is non-sensical. "It's no coincidence that the Tannery Artists left Take Back Santa Cruz out of the full-page 'thank you' ad to first responders they published in the Good Times following the murder there"

The reality is that TBSC is not a first responder. Maybe that's why they weren't included in the ad. You're agenda, again, is driving your logic.

As for "We need to force street artists off of Pacific because there are meth users in Santa Cruz?"...sadly, yes. When you can't cherry pick and force the meth tweaking panhandlers and drunks to move along while leaving the artists alone, your choice is to block them all from hanging out there, or none of them. Santa Cruz has chosen the former.

Wow. I guess freedom isn't very important to 'I laughed'.

"When you can't cherry pick and force the meth tweaking panhandlers and drunks to move along while leaving the artists alone, your choice is to block them all from hanging out there, or none of them. Santa Cruz has chosen the former."

This quote is pure ignorance. I imagine if statistics were compiled, there would be no correlation whatsoever between people selling their art on Pacific Avenue and meth use in Santa Cruz. To target artists in order to oust meth users is a prime example of TBSC logic.

"You're comparison is non-sensical. "It's no coincidence that the Tannery Artists left Take Back Santa Cruz out of the full-page 'thank you' ad to first responders they published in the Good Times following the murder there""

Do you have only one definition of 'first responder'?

The first responders the Tannery Artists referred to in their ad were the individual citizens who volunteered their help the day of the tragedy. There wasn't even one member of TBSC listed. A large list of businesses and organizations was also included, but zero mention of TBSC.

TBSC tried to insert itself into this tragedy, but they were rejected.

Your trollish, uneducated response to my comment is in my opinion comparable to your fascist position on these issues of the loss of civil liberties in Santa Cruz.

You may remember that the Great Morgani stopped playing downtown in protest. You also may remember his triumphant return. Last year the city came to a resolution over where street performers and street venders could perform/vend. The plan included a series of painted marks that demarcated areas where people could legally be. NOW, those marks have been systematically removed by the city, leaving very few areas remaining. The spaces directly in front of Forever 21 and New Leaf, have been stripped of art and performers. We here at Keep Santa Cruz Weird have a BIG problem with that.
