Middle East Film Night

When the government of Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan moved to demolish an historic park in the heart of Istanbul to build a massive shopping mall complex in June 2013, Turkish people united to occupy Gezi Park and adjacent Taksim Square – Turkey’s Tahrir. Occupy Gezi Park was more momentous than all the Occupy movements in the U.S. put together.

Three short films will be screened: Istanbul Rising (18 min), It Started with Trees: Revolt in Gezi Park (29 min), and Resist (30 min).

Sharat G. Lin, who witnessed the Turkish government crushing May Day demonstrations following on Gezi Park in 2014, will lead discussion.
