Written Proof of Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf's New Nighttime Protest Curfew
As part of a nationwide Black Women Matter day of action yesterday which focused on state violence against African American women and transgender people, a call-out was issued by area Black women and the Black Youth Project 100 for a 7pm rally at Oscar Grant plaza, set to be followed by a march down Broadway to Oakland police headquarters. Numerous speakers addressed related issues in the plaza. Then, as soon as the group began to move, OPD took the unusual step of immediately declaring that protesters would be cited and/or arrested for marching in the streets. There were children and baby carriages in the march and yet OPD came out with a huge show of force and blasted marchers with extremely loud announcements. A very reliable source whom I trust 100% informed me during the march, as OPD continued to do their best to intimidate protesters, that OPD's behavior was a result of direct orders from Mayor Libby Schaaf and her team that there be a new protest crackdown in Oakland including actual evening protest curfews. I put the word out as soon as I heard that. Today, I received this copy of the City of Oakland's "advisory" on a police-enforced ban on marches after sunset. [Never mind that it was well before sunset when OPD barraged the march yesterday with deafening announcements, motorcycles, a helicopter, and perhaps one hundred or more police officers.]
Text the document reads as follows...
