Dr. Anant Phadke discusses advocacy for health rights in public and private health services in Maharashtra, India.
Efforts by health activists in Maharashtra, India in recent years have created Community-Based Monitoring of Public Health Services, an innovative project that galvanizes the villagers’ feedback and monitoring of the Public Health Service in about 1000 selected villages and culminates in yearly Public Accountability Meetings. A grassroots movement has led to the demand for civil society participation in the regulation of private health services as well, and the adoption of the Standard Charter of Patients’ Rights.
Dr. Anant Phadke works with a number of organizations in the People’s Health and Science Movement in India and is Founding Coordinator and Senior Advisor to SATHI-CEHAT, a leading NGO in the movement for the right to health care.
