Speak Out to Demand Justice for Marissa Alexander!

For defending herself against an abusive partner, Marissa Alexander is facing 60 years in prison. She fired a warning shot to stop the attacker. Yet, she—the victim of abuse—was tried and found guilty of aggravated assault. This last September, the guilty verdict and unreasonable 20 year mandatory sentence were overturned. But she has to face a second trial this summer, and state prosecutor Angela Corey is demanding a 60 year sentence!

Marissa is a survivor of domestic violence, and is only facing charges because of this racist, sexist and unjust legal system. There is no crime in defending yourself from abuse. She never should have spent a day in jail. Marissa acted in self-defense and injured no one. She should not be subjected to a second trial. All charges against her should be dropped immediately.

It is critical in this time to show the force of people demanding justice. It was this strength that helped lead to Marissa being granted a new trial, and it is this strength that we must use now to demand that she be set free.
