Afro-Peruvian Rhythms: A Night of Film and Performance

Saturday July 13 / 7:00pm / $15 general and $ 12 students & seniors (bring ID) / Theatre

Mission Cultural Center and Palomino Productions are proud to present a screening of award-winning filmmaker Eve A. Ma’s hour-long documentary, A Zest for Life: Afro-Peruvian Rhythms, a Source of Latin Jazz, paired with a live performance by Jaranon y Bochinche’s. The documentary, which stars world-renowned dancer, percussionist, choreographer and folklorist Lalo Izquierdo, includes footage shot on location in Peru, and interviews and performance recorded in the studio. It presents the history and culture of Peruvians of African descent, a community that has contributed colorful dances, exciting rhythms, and many musical instruments to the world of music in general, and to Latin jazz in particular. Jaranon y Bochinche offer a wonderful compliment to the documentary. Along with their performance, they will offer a free lesson in zapateo footwork to brave audience members.
