peace for keeps invites you to celebrate berkeley's 4th annual peace symbol anniversary--its 53rd--this year posthumously honoring multi-artist claire burch (1924-2009) with berkeley's 1st renaissance artist award. a retorospective of her writings, collages, films, music and drawings will be held at redwood gardens, 2951 derby, berkeley, on sunday, february 20, at 3 p.m. light refreshments will be served. donations accepted. the peace symbol was created in london by conscientious objector/designer gerald holtom on february 20, 1958, as an emblem for that easter weekend's 1st ban-the-bomb march to aldermaston, england's nuclear laboratory. holtom first flashed on the goya masterpiece, "the shootings on principe pio," in madrid, of the peasant, hands raised before a napoleon firing squad in 1808. the artist then joined the british semaphore signals for n and d -- for nuclear disarmament, and emblazoned the epochal epic symbol . further info: (510)845-5481.
