 burch (1924-2009) with berkeley's 1st renaissance artist award.  a

 held at redwood gardens, 2951 derby, berkeley, on sunday, february 20, at 3 
 p.m.\nlight refreshments will be served.  donations accepted.\n\nthe peace 
 symbol was created in london by conscientious objector/designer gerald 
 holtom on february 20, 1958, as an\nemblem for that easter weekend's 1st 
 ban-the-bomb march to aldermaston, england's nuclear laboratory.  holtom 
 first flashed on the goya masterpiece, "the shootings on principe pio," in 
 madrid, of the peasant, hands raised before a napoleon firing squad in 
 1808.  the artist then joined the british semaphore signals for n and d -- 
 for nuclear disarmament, and emblazoned the epochal epic symbol .\nfurther
