WikiLeaks flashmob: San Francisco stands up for online free speech
by mark
Friday Dec 17th, 2010 2:38 AM
On Thursday, Dec. 16th, protesters rallied in downtown San Francisco during the evening rush hour to call for freedom for WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Julian Assange as well as accused whistleblower, Private First Class Bradley Manning. WikiLeaks' publication of thousands of US diplomatic cables, following on the heels of war logs and combat videos from the US occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq, has lead to Assange being labeled the "most wanted" man on the planet, for publishing leaks that expose some of the inner workings of US war-making and foreign policy.

Rainey Reitman is a staff activist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, an international non-profit digital rights advocacy and legal organization based in San Francisco, which has argued that government and corporate attacks on WikiLeaks' ability to publish the truth are attacks on Internet freedom and basic constitutional rights to free speech and a free press.

Jeff Paterson, a US Marine objector to the 1991 Gulf War, is a project director at Courage to Resist, an Oakland-based war resister support organization.

Most recently, Courage to Resist has led a campaign to provide legal support to Private First Class Bradley Manning, who is accused of leaking combat video and other documents to WikiLeaks. Manning has been locked up in the brig in Quantico, Virginia, in solitary confinement for six months with little or no access to visitors, letters, news, exercise, even pens or pencils. He is expected to remain in the brig for at least six more months before his military trial even begins.

Read more about their campaign to free Bradley Manning, including how to send him a holiday card, at http://standwithbrad.org/ and http://www.couragetoresist.org/x/content/blogcategory/64/122/

MacKerel is also involved in opposing the recently passed Sit/Law ordinance that criminalizes sitting on the sidewalk in San Francisco (tomorrow is Sidewalks Are for People Day).
