Heart of the City Farmers' Market in UN Plaza, San Francisco

Every Sunday and Wednesday morning, hundreds of birds are sold for food out of terrible conditions at the Heart of the City Farmers' Market in San Francisco.

Contrary to the spirit of a San Francisco farmers' market, the animals are a product of industrial farming and arrive wounded, sick, and dehydrated. They are sold live -- two per small paper bag -- to untrained individuals who bring them to their homes and restaurants to kill how and when they see fit.

Twice a week, we have a factory farm in the middle of our city and most people are unaware. The unfortunate situation presents an opportunity to advocate for the lives of these specific farmed animals while also educating the public on veganism and animal rights.

A small group of activists has been leafleting and investigating nearly every market day for months, but the time has come to take a stand. We have overwhelming evidence that the live poultry vendors at the Heart of the City Farmers' Market are in violation of many local, state and federal laws.

The proper authorities have been notified in every case but have refused to enforce. Join us on Sunday, October 10 to protest the city's inaction, the market management's complacency, and the poultry vendors' cruelty.

Leaflets and signs will be provided, but feel free to make your own too!

In violation of their permit to operate, the chicken vendors leave the birds in cages filled with their own feces and without water.

I lost 50 Lbs, quit eating animal products and I feel wonderful!!!! Going to the Farmers Market Civiv Center used to be a treat until one day I followed my nose and some awful screams. I found sick starving (eating their own feces) chickens. One chicken was lying down being stepped on by the others with no room to move. I started to cry as I saw them (screaming and struggling) being manhandled and stuffed in bags only to be taken somewhere and have their throats slit (if the person doing the slaughtering is humane enough!). The chickens are covered now but I know and can still hear and smell the abuse and inhumanity taking place. Please help us to train humans and stop the abuse at CIVIC CENTER PLAZA!!!!!) P
