Update: Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi’s finance ordinance for public access funding has passed the Budget and Finance committee.

On Wednesday April 29 2009 the Budget and Finance committee passed Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi’s ordinance for the future of public access, which will now go before the full board on May 5th 2009.

The vote was:
Supervisor Mirkarimi Yes
Supervisor Avalos Yes
Supervisor Chu No (Wanted it continued)

At that meeting the officials from the Department of Technology said they will re-issue another RFP, in hopes of getting other entities to apply for the gig.

And at this time many public access’ers are expecting to see smear ads regarding this issue on Mainstream TV.

Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi has once again put himself out there for public access TV and deserves a Special Thanks from all who use or watch the channels.
§Comcast Cable Representative

A representative from Comcast was there and he stated that determining how public access TV is run and how much money it gets is not up the State or City and that Federal Law trumps whatever they do. He also stated that if they have to give up more money to fund public access TV they will have to pass those fees onto cable subscribers. The cable bills would either go up $2.30 or more. He also said that cable fees are excessive because of the many taxes and fees that States have ordered them to pay.

Dear Public Access Viewers and Supporters:
Ordinance 090287 or the "State Video Franchise Holders" (ord.) will be heard in front of the full board of Supervisors on Tuesday May 5th in the Legislative Chamber(room 250) at 2pm.
They all need to hear from you....
Public Access is important because it is a venue for Free Speech.
It is also provides the community with resources to create their own media.
It is the only situation where paying a bill provides additional community resources.
In other words by paying the cable bill anyone from the community can make and air their own television shows.
The following Supervisors need to hear from the community about how important Public Access TV is to the community:
Michela Alioto-Pier 415 554-7752
David Chiu 415 554-7450
Carmen Chu 415 554-7460
Bevan Dufty 415 554-6968
Sean Elsbernd 415 554-6516
Sophie Maxwell 415 554-7670
David Campos 415 554-5144
Eric Mar 415 554-7410
John Avalos 415 554-6975
Mayor Gavin Newsom 415 554-6141

Please, please call them.
Any callers should refer to Ordinance 090287 or the State Video Franchise Holders ordinance when talking to them or their voice mail.
