Although over 3 million Americans who stutter, most people actually know very little about stuttering. This lack of awareness is why people who stutter meet discrimination, prejudice, and at times, social isolation. People who stutter represent a diverse group of individuals of different occupations and accomplishments. Famous people who stutter include actor, James Earl Jones, reporter, John Stossel, and actress, Marilyn Monroe.
Alliant International University is co-sponsoring a presentation with the National Stuttering Association to raise awareness about the challenges that people who stutter experience. The event is open to the Alliant International University community as well as the general public. Children and teens who stutter, along with their parents, are encouraged to attend. The presentation will include a panel of people who stutter sharing their personal experience and professional expertise. Topics to be included are: possible origins of stuttering, myths about stuttering (including psychological theories), and common experiences of people who stutter.
The panel will be facilitated by Nina Ghiselli , Psy.D. and Gina Davis. Dr. Ghiselli is a psychologist and educator who stutters. Ms. Davis is a student who stutters at the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University .
The National Stuttering Association is the nation’s largest support organization for people who stutter, with more than 80 local support groups including several in Northern California.
