Black Student Union at San Francisco State University show case African History Month.

by Francisco Da Costa
Black Student Union at San Francisco State is were it all began. Once you just said to utter the word "BSU" - at SF State and you could focus on what you wanted and get it. More, if the leaders of the SF BSU spoke - and they did speak up - the authorities and others listened. After years of stagnation - a few BSU students have taken on a task to light a "fire" and try their best to "enthuse" and "prod" and take the message of the SF Black Student Union - to a better place. Affect change - not only at the SF State University where "change" in badly needed - but to the community at large - where discrimination, racial profiling, gentrification, lack of opportunities - and the current Economic Crisis - have hit Blacks harder then any one single ethnic - community.
For the last two years some of us in the Bayview Hunters Point Community have hooked up with the Black Student from San Francisco State University to help the students - better comprehend the issues that the Bayview Hunters Point community faces.

On Thursdays we make some arrangements to bring the students after a hard day at the SF State University - to attend a Town Hall meeting at the Grace Tabernacle Community Church.

It has been a distinction working with the students from the SF State University but more importantly the students from the SF State - Black Student Union.

Once you just had to mention the word "BSU" and you could rally hundreds in minutes and attain the lofty goals that SF State University - was famous for.

Black Studies took its roots at SF State University and from there spread to the entire United States.

Today, the SF State Students take these great achievements for granted.

And while there are fewer Black students at State then they were in past years - and lesser compared to the glory years - when SF Black Student Union - reigned supreme - it should not deter the current SF Black Student Union - to set higher goals and strive to be the best.

The chore organizers started this year's - " African History Month" by gathering together and pronouncing to all that the SF BSU would hold fifteen events.

On February 2, 2009 at Jack Adams Hall starting at 6 pm the Black students from SF State and others gathered and addressed a topic - "My President is Black" - of course referencing to President Barack Hussein Obama.

The highlight of this event was the "critical thinking and presentation" by an astute student Koby who encouraged the students to look at the current Obama Administration and the minions that surround President Barack Hussein Obama - as intelligent constituents that are educated on issues.

The three other Professors who spoke on this day - all hailing from from Chicago - did not come close in their presentations - in challenging the students to think hard and work hard to comprehend the real world that we live in.

Many Black Professors have no clue about the struggle of Black People and less about the struggle of Black students. Many of them have never, ever visited the jails - where intelligent Black linger - and that is a trillion dollar business.

Many SF State Black Professors will NOT come out to the community and teach and talk on topics to challenge the community at large. They prefer to pander to the University Administration- and sit on the fence and watch.

Black students must learn early to relate to the Real World - and take up the challenge after educating themselves on issues. Do what is best for this Nation - but never, ever forgetting the Blacks that were brought here in Slavery - had to endure so much - to be free as all other human being are.

The next day February 3, 2009 was " Kickoff" at the Malcolm X Plaza from 12 noon to 2 pm.

There were hundreds of students who had set by their booths marketing their wares and the goodness of their Fraternities and so on.

Comcast was there and so was Bank of America - and other Corporations enticing the students to do what Corporation do best - sell themselves and teach - greed.

There are thirteen more events to be organized and there is no doubt that the San Francisco State University - Black Student Union - will do very well in organizing them and bring KUDOS to all Black Students - everywhere.

The SF State BSU wants to highlight the injustice done to Oscar Grant and have been close to the issue. The BSU wants to tackle the issue of Political Assassinations throughout History.

There is a Black Family Dinner - Arts and Food Festival.

Hurricane Katrina Candle Light Vigil at Malcolm X Plaza - and Good Morning America at Jack Adams Hall.

Black Family Day and a day named Black Men's Appreciation - the mostly Black women highlighting the Black Men - that a few and far between at the SF State University Campus.

A day set aside for African Liberation Day and again a benefit concert for Oscar Grant.

There is going to be a stunning African Fashion Show and of course a Hip-Hop Showcase and then a BSU Social Bowling Night at the Serra Bowl at Daly City.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the San Francisco State University Students and the Black Student Union for taking a stand and trying their best to revive the SF State BSU.

The struggle is greater today more then it ever was.

Our Black Professors - not all, but many have sold out and have been brain washed. Many of them have turned their back on their own people - much the same as many Black Students that have given up to fight for their rights - their history and in doing so - failed so many Black Leaders of the past from San Francisco State University.

I have hope in the current San Francisco State University - Black Student Union:
