For the last 4 years PacifiCorp's Klamath dams have created one of
the worst toxic algae problems ever recorded. This month, the State
Water Board will decide if the dams get a clean water permit, or if they get removed.

Dam Owner PacifiCorp Takes Hit From Regulators

California water quality
regulators have said they believe an application from the owner of the
Klamath River dams, which was looking to operate the hydropower project
with only minor changes in the future, doesn't fit state law. The State Water Resources
Control Board's staff on Tuesday said that Pacificorp's application isn't legally
feasible. The regulators said in a
notice to prepare an environmental impact report that they would
instead review a number of other alternatives to determine if they will
improve water quality in the troubled river, and bring that before the
public. Eureka Times-Standard - 10/2/08 [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0019kX4Grjy3JZmZYYUMrWN3QlqIA3E4oSqD5c-eH37ASge7997AHCzwidYqAXDGMNPXs-ixdYcjMbzPPNYcSGJ-6Yg9Nj0KvSHWzSzSWaEjr3ChhcszUJFnDQoCmbcKoUJ7lij9EgL4MNFDpH-cNkRXA==]

Salmon Fishermen Apply For Disaster Relief

Five hundred West Coast salmon fishermen, processors and other
business people have applied for a portion of $170 million worth of
disaster relief aid.
The Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission says it is processing
the aid applications and this week put the first checks in the mail.

Schwartzenegger Terminates California Endangered Fish

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger gushed about "green policies" and
"clean, green technology" Thursday when he gave the keynote address at
TechNet's "Growing Green Technology in California" forum. Ironically,
this was the same Schwarzenegger who last week engaged in a veto frenzy
of key environmental legislation, including landmark air pollution,
water recycling and fish protection bills. Independent Media - 10/9/08 [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0019kX4Grjy3Jaz91JcKYIFYwspocFc7hjIZtDXxPV5LiKEKDH9P3E_guXir9DD87s_lnslB1bhYH8Pxi1zuPyR3eMwBEMw5cdplTw7mWy7tF8GldEIJvVyly7velR3FYhDaxFkTu9KG8Cj8X9ssEGVu0Z5Eh329HX2rL3NdfPwqFE=]
Just how green California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is is definitely up for
debate. He has his moments of somewhat progressive policy, which he then dilutes
with moments of complete and utter ignorance. For example, when he signed California's
way overdue budget, he lined-out $3.1 million in funding from the Department of
Fish and Game (DFG) to restore salmon, steelhead and other endangered and threatened
species. LNG Pipeline Raises Doubts

More than 50 Upper Rogue residents brought lots of questions and some
controlled anger to a town hall meeting Wednesday held by
representatives of two companies proposing a liquefied natural gas
terminal in Coos Bay and a pipeline that would pass through the Upper
Rogue region on its way to Malin. Medford Mail Tribune - 9/25/08 [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0019kX4Grjy3JYHSdSA87RC4QqZsOiqjIJBReNYSsn2gxHS_dXTYJTcz-iEhUJMnN806isgl-kgJyxYlQgZ6KPWlGHP2ybNaVoPekKLHCZXJVWOR5VQZOdQacdBRGD7_UGwb6guDoou3iNKBQ51C9x23DARurwfuI7Scm4ZwsDE3O-j1a2VuNguVthcNgbVEa0ffYKeSippbUE=]
