SF Japan Consulate Site of Today's, Previous Demos

by NO G8
The Japanese consulate in San Francisco is the site of political/environmental demonstrations several times a year.
Today activists demonstrated against Japan's harassment and detention of protesters at the recent G8 Summit hosted by that country.

Last year activists dressed as dolphins came to 50 Fremont St. to protest Japan's fishing practices. Feminists and supporters have also demonstrated against the Japanese practice of kidnapping and holding in slavery "comfort women" (sex slaves) during WWII and the pre-war colonial period. Most of these sex slaves were held in Japanese occupied Korea, while others were nationals of the Philippines and China.

Notably, no national flag is displayed in front of the consulate at 50 Fremont St.

Location of the Japanese consulate in San Francisco. Very low-profile, there is no clearly displayed building directory, nor is there a Japanese flag to be seen anywhere in front of the building or in the lobby. The consulate is one of several offices in the building.

Parked nicely all in a row in front of the building, these exports were the only sign of a Japanese presence on the day of the demo.
