SF Japan Consulate Site of Today's, Previous Demos
The Japanese consulate in San Francisco is the site of political/environmental demonstrations several times a year. Today activists demonstrated against Japan's harassment and detention of protesters at the recent G8 Summit hosted by that country. Last year activists dressed as dolphins came to 50 Fremont St. to protest Japan's fishing practices. Feminists and supporters have also demonstrated against the Japanese practice of kidnapping and holding in slavery "comfort women" (sex slaves) during WWII and the pre-war colonial period. Most of these sex slaves were held in Japanese occupied Korea, while others were nationals of the Philippines and China.
