Nonprofit Acquires Rights to Berkeley Iceland
Tuesday, March 4, 2008 : Seven months after the historic Berkeley Iceland was saved from the wrecking ball by a 5-4 City Council vote, the Save Berkeley Iceland organization has entered into a contract to purchase the building. The group must now raise $12 million to purchase, restore, improve, and operate Berkeley's legendary ice palace.
The battle to prevent Berkeley’s Iceland’s replacement by condominiums galvanized the city, and gave many young people their first activist experience. To help with the capital campaign, or to get more information, visit www.saveberkeleyiceland.org/.Read More

The old ice rink is laden with toxics like lead paint. Kids shouldn't even be skating there now. Why do their parents let them? The risk to their health far outweighs any benefit of skating there.
Currently, noone is skating there- no kids or adults. There's a bunch of trash outside and the place is becoming blighted. Personally, as much as I don't know if there are any other rinks in Berkeley, there is definitely a need for more housing for people who already live here. Let's get that building occupied and get some regularly-serviced trash containers outside.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
