Daily Californian On The Wrong Side of Dissent

by yaman
The Daily Californian and The Daily Clog, two official student publications at UC Berkeley, have consistently demeaned student activists on campus and in Berkeley. Most recently, the Californian and the Clog came out against those supporting the Berkeley City Council resolution regarding military recruitment centers. But the justification it used--"free speech"--was absurd, given the power dynamic between the government and Berkeley citizens. Furthermore, and from a more general perspective, the Californian has consistently offered useless criticisms of student activists that have consistently aligned it, in effect, with the status quo.

An introduction:

One of the absurdest ideas that has arisen regarding the Berkeley City Council’s now-abandoned resolution telling military recruiters they were not welcome in the town, is the idea that “freedom of speech” for military recruiters was at stake. The internalization and reproduction of this idea by many people who supposedly are on the left, cautiously dissenting–in their heads, without action–against the American occupation of Iraq has also been startling. The Daily Californian and The Daily Clog are no exception.

No official paid representative of the American government has a right to say whatever he or she wants to say in an official capacity (this is different from their free ability to share their opinions, and to lie, unofficially). And certainly nobody should agree that representatives of the American government are allowed to lie, deceive, or trick citizens without consequence, especially minors. This is one of the allegations that has been raised against military recruiters, who are situated near Berkeley High School–that they exaggerate the benefits to students of joining the military.

Yes - a quick read of the bill of rights would inform them that Freedom of Speech is a protection for citizens from impingement by the government. The government would be interpreted as politicians and government employees.

For instance, teachers at UC Berkeley, or I as staff at another government agency, are not allowed to speak in a way favoring one religion, or to favor certain political expression, or stop a student from speaking or writing an essay.
The idea that the marines (acting within the context of their job) are owed freedom of speech is absurd. Really, we should only focus on the ability of marines employees to speak freely off the job. Currently, the leadership doesn't let military staff speak for themselves privately.
Local governments are allowed to regulate business expression. There are laws demanding that food in grocery stores be labeled properly, that outdoor signs conform to certain standards or aren't blocking the sidewalk, or that only certain types of businesses are allowed to locate on a certain block.

So using the pro-war arguments against them..."Marines have Rights" should then mean that any soldier who is against the war and occupation of Iraq and refuses to fight has the right to stay home or go home and not go to prison.
And yes, CP thank you for reminding the right wing of who and from what the first amendment is supposed to protect. Waving that American flag around that is more precious to them than human life. Yeah, don't touch this American flag but it's okay to send young men to kill and be killed. Please. You flag waivers calling me un-american. You all aren't even human.
The Vietnam War which cost 58,000 US soldiers lives and the lives of two million Vietnamese men, women and children is a war not even the war mongers defend anymore. USA ain't going to get a "victory" in Iraq for the same reasons they didn't get one in Vietnam. The Iraqi people will resist the occupation and they will resist that occupation until the last US soldier leaves. Bring those young men and women home now.
