KPFA IPD In Dog Fight With Fired Programmer Peter Laufer:Who is Lying?
KPFA Interim Program Director Sasha Lilley's hand picked host for replacing Larry Bensky is
now in a contest for who is telling the truth about the firing of Peter Laufer. Lilley who supported the derecognition of the unpaid staff apparently doesn't have much time for
the staff at the station. Laufer was let go without notice and in a phone call while he was
in New York. So much for station integrity. Concerned Listeners should be concerned about how one of their "leaders" treats the staff at the station.

PETER PANNED: Last time out, this column featured radio journalist and
talk-show host Peter Laufer assessing the state of radio, from his perch
as host of "Sunday" on KPFA (94.1 FM). Two days before the column
appeared, Laufer lost his perch. He was dismissed, by phone, by Sasha
Lilley, the station's interim PD.
Laufer had been on the job only since June, when he replaced the retired
Larry Bensky as host of the live current-affairs show. He says Lilley
told him that the show was "just not right for Sunday," and that, while
she "admired what you have brought to the airwaves," she also had
received "negative audience feedback."
Asked for a comment, Lilley responded: "KPFA does not comment on
personnel matters. However, the statements that I understand Peter is
attributing to me are not accurate."
Laufer, who stands by his quotes of Lilley, believes the real reason for
his dismissal is "mob rule" at the Pacifica station. "There has been an
active campaign against me by a group of KPFA activists who were miffed
from the day I was hired because I am not a 'person of color' and
because of my 'mainstream' credentials," says Laufer, who's logged time
as a reporter for ABC, CBS and NBC radio.
And this just in:Laufer's on Clear Channel! He and Bob Agnew, PD of
Green 960 (KKGN-AM), agreed to test a talk show on Sunday mornings, 9 to
10 a.m.

Peter Laufer lost his job. Sasha Lilley lost her reputation. Calling someone to fire them while on vacation out of town smacks of the kind of sleezy tactics you expect from the worst of corporate America. Real professional, Sasha. Hope you are proud of yourself.

laufer was ok, but there could be many other types of programming that could be just right for that spot...
Professionalism means checking your facts and you clearly didn't check yours. Peter Laufer was not on vacation but was working that week.
I'm in the union and we have a 6 month probation period. Peter didn't make it -- end of story.

The so called "KPFA Staffer" who apparently is pleased with KPFA Interim Program Director's
method of operation at the station is seeking to do damage control. Lilley who tells people she is
a professional in fact models herself after the corporate media hacks that run nearly all the
media outlets in the US. At the same time she considers herself a "leftist" of the Monthly Review
variety.
It was Lilley without consultation with the LSB or the programming council (which has been
trying to destroy for years) that picked Laufer and then dumped him. Whether you agree with
his programming or not of Laufer, Lilley showed that she is really a coward in not talking with Laufer
directly before she fired him. Part of being a competent management is being able to talk frankly with the staff of the
station. Both Lilley and KPFA Interim Station Manager Lemlem Rijio fail that test. This same
staffer is probably pushing the new Pacifica Executive Director to ignore the recommendations
of the LSB and keep Rijio in her position and if she does that it will continue the mangement-
staff cabal that dominates KPFA and was instrumental in thwarting a democratic election. This
same "staffer" was probably one of those who helped to violate democratic election
procedures at KPFA.
