Flyering in final hours of election day pushes Gavin Newsom over the top
Too close to call? Gavin Newsom is in a tight race for mayor of San Francisco, facing off against George Davis, Grasshopper Alec Kaplan, John Rinaldi, H. Brown, Ahimsa Porter Sumchai, Michael Powers, Wilma Pang, Lonnie S. Holmes, Harold M. Hoogasian, Josh Wolf, and Quintin Mecke.
In a heavily contested race for mayor of San Francisco, the incumbent, town drunk and wealthy playboy Gavin Newsom, made a frantic last minute bid to save his re-election campaign, hitting the pavement to get-out-the-vote at the heart of his Financial District and Contra Costa constituency, Embarcadero Station.
Newsom's parents are retired state appeals court Judge William Newsom and Tessa Menzies Newsom. After completing his education in 1992, Newsom started the PlumpJack Wine Shop with the financial help of family friend Gordon Getty. The business eventually grew to a multi-million dollar empire with over 700 employees, including five restaurants, a Napa Valley winery, a hotel at a ski resort, and two retail clothing stores. In 1996, Newsom was appointed by San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown to a vacant seat on the Parking and Traffic Commission. Later that same year, Brown appointed him to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Newsom was elected mayor in 2003 after national figures from the Democratic Party, including Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and Jesse Jackson, campaigned on his behalf.
