Latest election results, morning of Oct 21, 2007
Berne - Polls closed in Switzerland on Sunday in parliamentary elections where almost 5 million voters were invited to elect lawmakers for the next four years. Observers said it was too early to say whether one of the most expensive and hard-fought campaigns of recent years had persuaded more voters to turn out to choose from around 3,000 candidates fighting for more than 240 seats.

Postal votes cast in the three weeks prior to polling day pointed to an average turnout. Only around 40 to 45 per cent of Swiss voters have cast their ballots in the four-yearly elections during the last 50 years.

Two parties, the right wing Swiss People's Party (SVP/UDC) and the Greens were expected to be the main winners. The SVP/UDC, which holds a majority of seats, was ahead in the polls in the final weeks of campaigning while the Greens, in fifth place, had made the biggest gains at the expense of the second biggest party, the Socialists, attaining a 10 per cent share.

The two main centre parties the Radicals and the Christian Democrats, have remained stable at around 15 per cent each.

Analysts believe there will be little change to the make up of the seven-strong executive or cabinet where the seats are currently shared between four main parties. The Greens currently have no representation in the executive which will be reselected on December 12 by the parliament.
