Demonstrators demanded that the Department of Toxic Substances Control implement its Enforcement Order on Romic Technologies in East Palo Alto!

Youth United for Community Action members invited the Raging Grannies to join the rally; the Grannies ran around Romic's facility in Hazmat costumes demonstrating with comical street theater that Romic continues to be a toxic presence in East Palo Alto.

Romic is currently in the midst of fighting the enforcement order issued by the Department of Toxic Substance Control. DTSC's enforcement order mandated Romic to stop 70% of their operations which means that they are only allowed to store drums under 85 pounds.

Working together with the Center on Race Poverty and the Environment, community activists plan to file a motion to intervene with Romic's attempt to fight the order.

Romic is an unsafe hazardous waste recycling facility that has been contaminating East Palo Alto since 1964 and has not had a proper operating permit for the past 14 years. Romic has had constant violations that have put the life of East Palo Alto residents at risk. Community residents have waged a campaign to shut down Romic in East Palo Alto since 1989.

§Shut Down Romic in East Palo Alto -- 100%

Finally, after many years of hard work by youth activists and a supporting cast that includes the Raging Grannies, Green Action, and community activists like Keisha and Peter Evans, Romic Technologies in East Palo Alto is 70% shut down...

We won't stop until Romic is 100% OUT of East Palo Alto and will remain vigilent to make sure NO other polluting company finds its way into the community.

We joined YUCA (Youth United for Community Action) and marched up and down Bay Street in Palo Alto. Grannies Jane, Gail, and Ruth R and Ruth C. portrayed Hazmat inspectors. Grannies Sharon and Barb B. joined in the march! Sharon wore caution tape around her neck that we taped onto the Romic sign in front of the site, and Granny Shirley P showed up to support us with her ukulele playing skills.
