The film captures the intense energy of live performances, as well as candid moments of band members' lives at work and on the road, and the controversy at the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival that landed them in a quagmire of protest and praise from a fiercely divided crowd. It also captures the truly funny and warm people behind the music and the politics.
The on-stage antics of blow-jobs, sadomasochistic acts and mock castrations are not about shocking the audience for shock's sake, but can be understood on a deeper level through the band members' personal disclosures. The film reveals how the humor and physicality of their controversial performances give these
five individuals the peace to experience the rapture of being alive.

"Five Habitats: Squatting at Langton" is a laboratory-style, experiential exhibition modeled after Jock Reynolds' 1978 show "Five Habitats for Five Members" Dodie Bellamy's work forcues on Kathy Acker, the novelist and theorist..... Bellamy will display a selection of Kathy Acker's clothes during her residency at New Langton Arts, and on Wed., July 12 at 7pm she will give a presentation, "Digging Through Kathy Acker's Stuff." Bellamy meditates upon relics, ghosts, compulsive shopping, archives, make-up, our drive to mythologize the dead, Acker's own self-mythologizing, the struggle among followers to define Acker, bitch fights, and the numina of DNA.
Kevin Killian will also be part of the Squatter's exhibit. His space will be devoted to all 132 issues
of our zine Mirage, as well as a selection of art that inspired our zine.
