Paul Gallegos Wins Re-Election

by Jaybird Harvey
For the third time in four years, Humboldt County District Attorney Paul Gallegos wins approval of voters.

Eureka, CA - In a close race that lasted late into the evening, Gallegos defeated challenger Worth Dikeman, who had overwhelming support of law enforcement in a campaign that has been labeled among the most bitter in Humboldt County history.

The relationship between the DA’s office and law enforcement was a central issue during the campaign. Gallegos, who did not seek endorsement by law enforcement, cited rules by the American Bar Association that state “prosecutors should take care to avoid any relationships with the police that might cast doubt on the independence and integrity of the office of the prosecutor.”

Dikeman’s close relationship with law enforcement failed to capture voter support. Dikeman’s campaign manager, Dave Parris, is an investigator for the Eureka Police Department.

The issue of the relationship between the DA and law enforcement was inflamed with the April 14, 2006 police shooting of Eureka resident Cheri Lyn Moore, who was distraught over the anniversary of the suicide of her son and behaving erratically in her downtown apartment when police shot her nine times. An investigation, including a coroner’s inquest, is continuing, though Parris and Dikeman held press conferences to claim it was over and accused Gallegos of politicizing Moore’s death.

Every police union in Humboldt County endorsed Dikeman, and his campaign office was managed and run by cops. Why? What Dikeman offered, and what the cops wanted, was impunity for police action. Dikeman represents the not-so-good old boys, and that's the way it was before the good people of Humboldt elected Gallegos. Dikeman rushed to absolve the Eureka cops of any wrongdoing in the multiple-shooting-by-cop death of Cheri Moore, a mental patient who was off her meds.

Dikeman had the gall to accuse Gallegos of politicizing the Cheri Moore case, but it was Dikeman who called a press conference to make that accusation. Dikeman claimed that the coroner's report on the Moore death is complete, and Gallegos should have issued a statement clearing them of wrongdoing. But in fact, the coroner's report is not complete, as confirmed by the coroner himself. In Dikeman's twisted logic, Gallegos' silence on the Moore case was politicizing it, while Dikeman calling a press conference about it was NOT politicizing it.

Dikeman has lied repeatedly in his efforts to undermine public confidence in his boss, Paul Gallegos. Dikeman needs to find a new job, somewhere a long way from Humboldt, someplace where people still believe that cops can do no wrong.

Time for Dikeman to leave the DA's office. If he doesn't go voluntarily, he should be fired. The campaign lies about the Moore shooting, and his comments on the pending appeal of the PL fraud suit were totally inappropriate.

Dikeman said repeatedly it would be wrong to comment on his position on Measure T, but had no problem mischaracterizing pending litigation by the DA's office. Very transparent.
by Maxxam silences dissent in Humboldt?
Just curious is Gallegos intends to pursue the fraud lawsuit against Maxxam/Pacific Lumber for deliberite alteration in property boundary on THP, enabling Maxxam/PL to extract redwoods from riparian habitat, furthering erosion, etc..

The recall campaign against Gallegos was funded by Maxxam/PL following his fraud lawsuit against them, though today we hear very little about the current status of the lawsuit. When the community places their hopes in an elected official like Gallegos in favor over a worse alternative in the form of Worth dikeman, the community still needs to pressure this lesser evil elected official to keep his promises and pursue the lawsuit..

Instead of going after the corporate criminal Charles Hurwitz, CEO of Maxxam, Gallegos spends taxpayer money with frivolous lawsuits against treesitters and forest defenders who are risking themselves to save this endangered redwoods ecosystem for the future generations. When committing a far lesser 'crime' of trespassing (corporate property ownership is open to interpretation also) with the intent of preventing a far greater crime (ecocide) from occurring, the Humboldt DA should not be aggressively prosecuting forest defenders while being relaxed in the pursuit of greater criminal activities of Maxxam/PL..

History will mark the law enforcement mercenary personal like Eric Schatz and Mike Oxman with the role of lesser thugs, Humboldt Sheriffs as their jackbooted taxpayer supported accomplices, and corporate execs and their politican allies (in Hurwitz case John Doolittle, Richard Pombo and Tom Delay) who gut environmental safeguards and prevent investigations of Hurwitz's criminal activities at Texas Saving and Loan, where he played a game of "Texas hold 'em' junk bonds trading that lost steelworker's pensions in the Kaiser takeover, replaced by the pension of Pacific Lumber workers following Maxxam's takeover of locally owned PL..

Not to mention Maxxam is stealing from the impoverished villagers in Ghana where Maxxam owned Kaiser subsidiary Valco is engaging in theft of electricity from the ecocidal Akosombo dam that stagnates the waters (increase of malaria, fish die-offs, etc..) of the Volta River.

In addition to no electricity, the Ghanan people lost valuable valley farms and forestland following the dams contruction. Now Maxxam takes the electricity generated from the Akosombo dam for Kaiser's aluminum smelting operation (returns toxic water to river) at far lower rates than charged the average resident, thanks to free trade policy of WTO. This shows a pattern of criminal activity on the part of Charles Hurwitz and Maxxam corporation in several time zones and multiple continents, spanning three decades time. Yet nobody is able to penetrate the tight political armor of lobbyists like Hurwitz, thanks to his allies Doolittle, Pombo, Delay and old Skull and Bones Yale frat buddy GW Bush himself. Talk about being untouchable, Al Capone don't have nuttin' on Hurwitz..

For that reason it is up to everybody to rise up against this system that allows corporate criminals like Hurwitz and other CEOs to buy protection from politicians and stifle dissent by police state terror tactics. We cannot depend on elected officials like Gallegos to obtain any justice for people, ecosystems, workers, etc.. from corporate tyrants like Maxxam CEO Charles Hurwitz..

One activity i would like to help with is rekindling the spirit of Judi Bari and introducing logging contracters to possibilities offered by IWW union organizing. Solidarity between ecoactivists and workers led to the tremendous support of Redwood Summer and the resulting car bomb that seriously injured Judi and Daryl Cherney. The Sacramento Valley also has support from IWW organizing that leverages worker solidarity against corporate and police state oppression. When forest workers become organized they can demand better pay and slower working pace (less risk of severe physical injury and/or death), thus less logging. Simply slowing the pace of logging is not the desired goal for many forest defenders, though worker support in a slowdown can and will put pressure on the Maxxam CEO to plan for more sustainable logging activities. Since this is not feasable for the short term fixation of Hurwitz and Maxxam shareholders, they may be encouraged to withdraw their activities from Humboldt (y Ghana) entirely and the forest and rivers can retrun to the stewardship of the local people..

intro from IWW;

"Welcome to the web site for the LWIU 120, a website for all workers in forests. All workers engaged in logging operations, in saw and shingle mills, and in preparing wood for fuel and manufacturing purposes. Bark and sap collection, and restoration forestry.

The LWIU is responsible for many of the good working conditions and benefits that Lumber Workers came to expect in the late 20th Century. There is not currently an organized Lumber Workers Industrial Union, but consider the following:

Working conditions in the industry improved as a result of the IWW, but declined after the IWA (AFL-CIO) purged elected leftists from its membership.

Working conditions in the industry have been in decline for the past two decades due to automation, liquidation logging, and unionbusting.

The IWA has (sometimes) prevented a bad situation from becoming much worse, but they have not stopped the attacks on timber industry workers, and in some cases the IWA has made it worse.

Clearly, there is still a need for One Big Union in timber. Even though much of the information on this site deals with the past, we believe that (other than changes in technology) almost all of this information is as relevant todayas it was a century ago."

The Fraud suit against PL is being appealed. The case was never decided on it's merits. The court has not examined whether PL committed fraud, but will when the appeal is heard.

"Gallegos, who did not seek endorsement by law enforcement".

Of course he didn't. Law enforcement, along with anyone else in the criminal justice system, wouldn't give Gallegos their endorsement.

“prosecutors should take care to avoid any relationships with the police that might cast doubt on the independence and integrity of the office of the prosecutor.”

Then how can he have a campaign manager that is a police officer? Hypocrite!
