STRIKE AVERTED, BUT SCHOOLS STILL CLOSED TOMORROW!!!
Just minutes ago the Oakland Education Association reps confirmed that they have reached a settlement and while teachers will be going to work tomorrow, it is still a non-student day ....because the district cannot assure that everyone will get the word and they cannot guarantee safe staffing levels. An extra day will probably be added at the end of the school year.

This means the Parks & Rec Centers will still offer the programs below for parents who need a place for their children tomorrow.
Council President DeLaFuente and I asked the Mayor and City Administrator Edgerly this afternoon to open as many recreation centers as possible to help parents. We want to thank them and especially Park & Recreation Director Audree Taylor-Jones and her staff, who have been scrambling all afternoon and evening to open as many Park & Centers tomorrow as possible.
At the locations below highlighted in bold print....We will be offering our "School's Out / Rec's In!" program, run by OPR to meet the needs of parents and students within OUSD who are out during school holidays. Kids have the opportunity to participate in activities such as arts and crafts, sports, games, field trips, etc. The program normally costs $35 per day or$100 per week.
TOMORROW THE PROGRAM IS FREE.
There may be limited spaces at some locations, we will operate the program on a first come basis. Parents should be prepared to fill out the registration and contact information when they come.

Partial victory in Oakland school struggle
The Oakland Education Association has had a significant gain in its struggle with the state-imposed trusteeship in the Oakland Unified School District. State-appointed gauleiter Randall Ward has backed down in the face of a threatened one-day strike tomorrow (Thursday April 20) and cancelled all classes.
Ward had previously announced that he would keep the schools open with a host of $300-a-day scabs recruited by newspaper ads. Ward had to declare a "state of emergency" in the district to enable use of these unqualified and uncredentialed "teachers."
In the face of a solid front of all the other OUSD unions in support of the teachers, Ward had to yield. Cafeteria workers, secretaries, aides and custodians had announced their refusal to cross the OEA picket lines tomorrow. In additions, hundreds of parents had pledged to keep their children out of school rather than endanger them in the hands of scabs.
Ward faced the probability that his overpaid and unqualified scabs would be left to roam the schools with no secretaries or aides to tell them what to do and no children to teach. In addition, the OUSD would lose the ADA (Average Daily Attendance) money needed to pay the scabs.
He surrendered.
At noon Thursday there will be a rally at Peralta Park (on 10th Street, between Kaiser Auditorium and the District Office). Originally planned as a strike rally in conjunction with picketing, it will be a contract rally to push the union's demands forward.
