Protest Against Senator Hillary Clinton's Continuing Support of the War in Iraq

by CODEPINK (codepinkbayarea [at] riseup.net)
In a recent fundraising letter for her upcoming senatorial re-election campaign Hillary Clinton claims: "Part of my job is being a good listener...." She goes on to describe all the good listening she does in her job as our United States Senator and then states, "Now I'd like to listen to you." Included with the fundraising appeal is a three-page 2005 Critical National Issues Survey that covers a broad range of political issues---but never ONCE mentions the war in Iraq.

Join us, as we wear large theatrical ears and pink gear and say HILLARY YOU'RE NOT LISTENING; BRING THE TROOPS HOME NOW.

If her voting record on Iraq weren't bad enough (*see below for details) a few days after Representative John Murtha (D-PA) bravely called for the redeployment of troops currently in Iraq, Hillary offered this response: an immediate U.S. withdrawal from Iraq would be "a big mistake."

On December 20th Senator Hillary Clinton of New York will sit down with Jane Pauley at The Bar Association of San Francisco Special Benefit Event at the Masonic Center for a live C-SPAN broadcast. While using San Francisco as a backdrop for Clinton's re-election campaign, the event is an opportunity for Bay Area Democrats to dish-out $75.00 - $300.00 to attend at 7:00pm no-host reception followed by an evening of political image makeover chit-chat with Pauley and Clinton.

Let's be outside to let Hillary know we're following her. And this is only the beginning.

*Hillary's record:

1) October, 2002: Clinton voted YES on House Joint Resolution 114, "to authorize the use of United States Armed Forces against Iraq." The measure passed the Senate 77-23.

2) April, 2003: Clinton voted YES on Senate measure 762, "to make supplemental appropriations to support Dept. of Defense operations in Iraq, Dept. of Homeland Security and Related Efforts for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2003."

3) Oct., 2003: Clinton voted YES on Senate measure 1689, "to appropriate $87 billion to fund ongoing military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. $65.6 billion of which is designated for military operations."

4) June, 2004: Clinton voted YES on Senate measure 2400, "to authorize appropriations for fiscal year 2005 activities of the Dept. of Defense," including $25 billion in emergency funding for military operations in Iraq.

(All these voting records came from the same source:

In addition to those votes:

a) In Feb., 2005 she made the somewhat dubious statements that much of Iraq was functioning well, that elections there had succeeded and that the insurgency was failing (http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=515943).

b) In Feb., 2005, she said the US should not set a deadline for troop withdrawal because it would "play into the hands of the insurgents."

b) In July 2005, she called for increasing the size of the army by 80,000 soldiers. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/8573139/

c) On Nov. 30, 2005, in advance of Bush's major policy speech on Iraq, Clinton issued her own letter on the war. Go to

This might be a good protest to pump up a bit. Put it in the middle column, up top.

The San Francisco Masonic Center has announced today that due to a potential conflict with Senate duties, we must postpone this event. We hope to reschedule it for January 2006.

One has to be pleased that the antiwar movement is taking shape. Finally the target isn't just George. W. Bush and gang. Last night at a chic Manhattan fundraiser for Hillary Clinton, antiwar activists staked out the Senator and vowed to do so until she changes her position on the war.

Senator Clinton released a letter last week which clarified her (non) position on Iraq. She said she wouldn't accept any timetable for withdrawal and won't even embrace a "redeployment" of US troops along the lines of Rep. Murtha.

"I take responsibility for my vote, and I, along with a majority of Americans, expect the president and his administration to take responsibility for the false assurances, faulty evidence and mismanagement of the war," Clinton wrote in her lengthy letter that amounted to nothing short of denial for her own culpability in the mess.

Last Friday Sen. Clinton spoke at an event in Kentucky where she reiterated her position stating, "The time has come for the administration to stop serving up platitudes and present a plan for finishing this war with success and honor," she said. "I reject a rigid timetable that the terrorists can exploit, and I reject an open timetable that has no ending attached to it."

Translation: Sen. Clinton is all for an extended American stay in Iraq. She "takes responsibility" for her vote on the war, but won't admit that it was wrong. And of course, Clinton is still for "winning" this war. Whatever that means.

Antiwar activists across the country have not been overly pleased with Sen. Clinton's continued warmongering these past few weeks. Medea Benjamin of Code Pink, who supported John Kerry's pro-war campaign last year, has changed her tune on the Democrats and says she will be hot on Clinton's trail across the country. "We're calling it Bird-Dog Hillary," Benjamin raves.

It's about time.

Cindy Sheehan also said she'll be tracking down Hillary, maintaining that her and other activists may even take Camp Casey to the streets of NYC. Activists here in New York assured me last month that they plan on organizing a lot of events and sit-ins in front of Clinton's offices in the months ahead. I think this is proof the antiwar movement is finally getting somewhere.

Over on the other side of the country in San Francisco antiwar activists plan to hold a huge rally on December 20, where Clinton will be attending a bar association benefit with an interview session with Jane Pauley.

Focusing all of the antiwar movement's energy on the Republicans is shortsighted, and perhaps worst of all, completely naïve. The Democrats not only authorized this war, they still by and large defend the ongoing occupation.
