Get a Degree to Change the World! Start This Fall! Get Your BA or MA
Degree at San Francisco's New College of California in one of our
Critical, Activist and Visionary Academic Programs focusing on Social
Change, Ecology and Sustainability or radical Media Studies.

Since 1971, New College of California in San Francisco has been
offering accredited degrees which seek to link education and social change to
provide students with the knowledge and skills to make the world more
just, sacred and sustainable. Within the many offerings at New College,
the Programs in Activism and Social Change; Culture, Ecology and
Sustainable Community and Media Studies work closely together to provide
educational opportunities to learn how to confront and change the system,
create ecologically sustainable alternatives and to create independent
media to provide an alternative source of information about local,
national and international events.

·Activism and Social Change BA/MA Program begins 3rd Year in Fall 2005!

Ever dream there was a college where you could earn a degree in
Activism? Now there is! New College of California in San Francisco,
http://www.newcollege.edu/activismchange offers Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programs
in Activism and Social Change to help create a more just, sacred and
sustainable world.

These BA & MA programs teach critical and relevant social theory,
history and analysis of social movements and activist skills taught by a
practicing local, national and international activist faculty. Students
conduct activist BA or MA theses/projects using internships with local,
national and/or globally-based organizations. Finally, all graduating
students will develop concentrated learning in specific areas which
will prepare them for activist careers in areas such as environmental
justice, health and medical care, affordable housing and homelessness,
union organizing, legal and human rights, peace activism, etc.

The program's Core Faculty combines many years of integrating academic
and activist work. In addition – Activist Faculty -- locally,
nationally and internationally known activists such as Kevin Danaher of Global
Exchange, environmental activist Julia 'Butterfly' Hill, Human Rights
activist Van Jones and many others, serve as workshop leaders, guest
lecturers and community advisors. This past year, 60’s civil rights and
anti-war activist, founder of Students for a Democratic Society, and
former California State Senator Tom Hayden was Activist
Faculty-in-Residence teaching seminars in Social Movements and organizing a student
project which is leading San Francisco to adopt the strongest anti-sweatshop
legislation in the country.

· New College North Bay Ecology and Sustainability Campus:
Alternative Architecture& Natural Building, Sustainable Agriculture, Green
Business and more! Alternative Education for ‘Another World that is
Possible’!

In 1998, an accomplished, visionary faculty and staff (including Santa
Rosa residents Richard Heinberg author of The Party’s Over: Oil, War
and the Fate of Industrial Societies and PowerDown: Options and Actions
for a Post-Carbon World) created New College of California’s North Bay
Campus in Santa Rosa http://www.newcollege.edu/northbay. Since that time, it
has been granting fully accredited BA, MA and ‘Green’ MBA degrees to the
leaders of the future (over 200 alumni) with curricula emphasizing a
broad range of intelligent, socially and ecologically sustainable
alternatives to war and terrorism, environmental pollution, and economic
instability.

The New College North Bay’s Bachelor’s Degree Program in Culture,
Ecology, and Sustainable Community is a one-year degree BA completion
program offered on weekends and designed for people interested in the
interdependence of culture, politics, ecology, and community and who want to
learn how to create a sustainable future. The program focuses on
developing a critical perspective of the history and present condition of
modern society, while learning new ways to conceptualize solutions to
modern problems and acquiring skills to build a sustainable future. Students
can develop concentrations or majors in EcoDwelling; Ecological
Agriculture; Consciousness, Healing and Ecology; Holistic Nutrition; Activism
and Social Change or do a Self-Designed concentration in areas such as
eco-psychology or sustainability education,

Equally important are the New College North Bay Weekend Graduate MA and
‘Green’ MBA Degree Programs. In the Masters Program, the Core
Leadership Seminars provide topical seminars in culture, ecology, and
sustainable community; social and ecological theory; and leadership skills in
creating social change and are combined with concentration area curriculum
majors in EcoDwelling; Ecological Agriculture; Consciousness, Healing
and Ecology; Holistic Nutrition; Activism and Social Change or
independent study leading to a Self-Designed concentration such as Psychology or
Education. Students can also pursue a ‘Green’ MBA in Environmental
Entrepreneurship degree through a rigorous five-semester curriculum
integrating the Core Leaderships Seminars, business skills classes and
coursework in visionary environmental and socially responsible business
practices.

The New College North Bay Campus programs are offered in weekend
intensive
in order to be user-available to working students, as well as a
students from a wide geographic area. Additionally, students in the BA and MA
programs often can finish their degrees in one calendar year.

·Media Studies MA Program teaches how to create Alternative,
Independent Radical Media!

This program is a three-semester, 36-unit course of study leading to
the Master of Arts (MA) in Media Studies. Offering an innovative media
studies education for social change, the Media Studies Graduate Program
is founded on the belief that vibrant alternative media are urgently
needed to renew our democracy and achieve peace and social justice. The
program encourages media makers to speak truth to power, expose injustice
and enable marginalized communities to utilize media – and in these
ways create a forum for the practice of democracy. Questioning the notion
that media can be “objective,” the program explores models of media
making that challenge people to think critically, imagine alternatives and
embrace possibilities for a better world.

The program includes a two-course sequence in Media and Society that
examines the history and political economy of mainstream and alternative
media, critical media literacy, and theoretical perspectives on media
and culture. A three-course Media Lab sequence provides practical
experience in print journalism, radio, video and web design. Students do more
advanced work in journalism and media production through elective
courses, internships and media projects. http://www.newcollege.edu/media_studies .
