Students conduct activist BA or MA theses/projects using internships with local, national and/or globally-based organizations. Finally, all graduating students will develop concentrated learning in specific areas which will prepare them for activist careers in areas such as environmental justice, health and medical care, affordable housing and homelessness, union organizing, legal and human rights, peace activism, etc. The program's Core Faculty combines many years of integrating academic and activist work. In addition – Activist Faculty -- locally, nationally and internationally known activists such as Kevin Danaher of Global Exchange, environmental activist Julia 'Butterfly' Hill, Human Rights activist Van Jones and many others, serve as workshop leaders, guest lecturers and community advisors. This past year, 60’s civil rights and anti-war activist, founder of Students for a Democratic Society, and former California State Senator Tom Hayden was Activist Faculty-in-Residence teaching seminars in Social Movements and organizing a student project which is leading San Francisco to adopt the strongest anti-sweatshop legislation in the country. ************************************************************************************************** · New College North Bay Ecology and Sustainability Campus: Alternative Architecture& Natural Building, Sustainable Agriculture, Green Business and more! In 1998, an accomplished, visionary faculty and staff (including Santa Rosa residents Richard Heinberg author of The Party’s Over: Oil, War and the Fate of Industrial Societies and PowerDown: Options and Actions for a Post-Carbon World) created New College of California’s North Bay Campus in Santa Rosa http://www.newcollege.edu/northbay. Since that time, it has been granting fully accredited BA, MA and ‘Green’ MBA degrees to the leaders of the future (over 200 alumni) with curricula emphasizing a broad range of intelligent, socially and ecologically sustainable alternatives to war and terrorism, environmental pollution, and economic instability. The New College North Bay’s Bachelor’s Degree Program in Culture, Ecology, and Sustainable Community is a one-year degree BA completion program offered on weekends and designed for people interested in the interdependence of culture, politics, ecology, and community and who want to learn how to create a sustainable future. The program focuses on developing a critical perspective of the history and present condition of modern society, while learning new ways to conceptualize solutions to modern problems and acquiring skills to build a sustainable future. This program is a three-semester, 36-unit course of study leading to the Master of Arts (MA) in Media Studies. Offering an innovative media studies education for social change, the Media Studies Graduate Program is founded on the belief that vibrant alternative media are urgently needed to renew our democracy and achieve peace and social justice. The program encourages media makers to speak truth to power, expose injustice and enable marginalized communities to utilize media – and in these ways create a forum for the practice of democracy. Questioning the notion that media can be “objective,” the program explores models of media making that challenge people to think critically, imagine alternatives and embrace possibilities for a better world. The program includes a two-course sequence in Media and Society that examines the history and political economy of mainstream and alternative media, critical media literacy, and theoretical perspectives on media and culture. A three-course Media Lab sequence provides practical experience in print journalism, radio, video and web design.
