Where Can a Homeless Man Sleep in America, If Not at a Church?

by Curtis John Surpless (cjsurpless [at] yahoo.com)
Homeless man arrested for not having a home!
At 10:30pm on July 18th, I was awaken by an officer who, when asked, refused to give me his name and badge number, while placing me under arrest for "loitering".

After being released from the Sonoma County jail, I took the time to look up the penal code that I had allegedly violated, which was, and still is, PC 647(h); Loitering. By the way, I was held in "booking" for 8 hours before being released, without even being given breakfast, at 6:30am.

According to this particular law, to "loiter" means to delay or linger without a lawful purpose for being on the property. Well, I beg to differ, and am planning to work on getting away with this in court. My court date is August 9 at 8:30am. I also plan on taking a jury trial, making them spend the money in retaliation for such stupidity.

The only thing that I've got on my side thus far is God. And this is only because it was at God's house (who happens to also be my Father). I was sleeping on the steps of a church.

Psalm 91:1 says, "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, will rest in the shadow of the Almighty."

The shame of it all is that in the U.S.A. the richest land on Earth we cannot build some simple buildings with bedrooms and bathrooms with showers so that the jobless people can have a place to sleep and to keep clean.
We can spend billions on war that kill our soldiers and not a few millions to house the homeless.

I think you are a charitable person and very sensitive. So what I cannot understand is the reason why you are so harsh with other people.
Anyway, don't you have places like those you mention?
We have them here. However, homeless usually prefer to stay in the street even if it is freezing. Last winter I saw two policemen trying to convince a man who had gone to his bed in the street and was ready to go to sleep. He refused, however, although it was freezing. And, as the policemen insisted, the homeless got ungry with them and kept saying: "leave me alone".
those homeless people say they'd rather stay in the street, so they don't have to keep schedules and rules. Although from time to time, they go their to have a shower.
