Green Party Mayor Jason West made headlines on February 27 when he performed 25 gay and lesbian marriages in his small town of New Paltz, New York. Since then, ministers from several denominations have stepped in to participate in the historic struggle for marriage equality, despite the fact that Mayor West and two Unitarian ministers, Kay Greenleaf and Dawn Sangrey, are all facing potential jail time for their actions. They face misdemeanor charges of solemnizing civil marriages without a license, a crime that could give them up to 1 year in jail for each marriage performed.
