Liquid Natural Gas Proposal Goes to Critical Vote
Eureka City Council to vote on Liquid Natural Gas proposal.
The proposal to construct a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import facility heads to a critical vote this Tuesday, March 16th before the Eureka City Council, when it will consider giving Calpine Corporation the option of buying public land on Humboldt Bay for this controversial plan.
A growing number of citizens are becoming concerned about the serious safety, security, environmental, and economic impacts with this facility. Calpine and its proponents are now attempting to downplay these concerns, telling the public that an "independent study" will review these issues and the City will have an "off-ramp" to exit the agreement at its discretion. However, the "independent study" outlined in the current agreement is anything but independent, and the purported "off-ramp" is a poorly worded and dangerous contract for the public.
This vote has implications for everyone in the region, and it is absolutely critical that local officials hear from everyone who lives and works in the area and/or cares about Humboldt Bay. Please call and write today and tell them to say no to this bogus plan! Please tell them that if any "study" is to go forward, it must be truly independent and must be concluded prior to any land agreement is signed with Calpine. More information on this agreement follows, as well as the latest relevant news and other information.

natural gas imported to Humboldt Bay from Bolivia is part of the Calpine plan that uses WTO/FTAA globalization free trade agreements to extract natural gas from underneath the feet of Bolivian people..
the campesino protest last fall showed the world that the Bolivian people are in solidarity against the US puppet president. the corporation involved in natural gas extraction is Pacific Natural Gas Consortium, a spin-off of British Petroleum, similar to Calpine coming into being after a massive 1.8 billion start-up from ENRON. This represents the petroleum corporations attempting to control natural gas as an "alternative energy". Calpine is also engaging in the chemical fouling of sacred Medicine Lake with geothermal drilling. The claim of their geothermal project as environmentally sound is misleading, underground hydrogen sulfide will be released in the geothermal drilling and contaminate the healing waters of Medicine Lake..
most of the energy from Medicine Lake would be used for spotlights in Reno casinos and High Desert State prison in Susanville as more people are incarcerated by this racist, classist system of corporate control. Ironically, the indigenous tribes who hold Medicine Lake as sacred are finding themselves incarcerated in California's prisons..
local production of methane (CH4), a natural gas, is possible by a form of composting biomass that traps the methane and stores it in a safer way. Local production doesn't involve tankers and dredging eelgrass habitat of Humboldt Bay, doesn't involve seismically explosive geopolitical situations that take advantage of Bolivian people by drilling on their land, and doesn't involve dealing with petroleum corporation offshoots like Calpine and Pacific Natural Gas Consortium. Composting biomass and collecting methane would be locally owned and operated, providing jobs for the community and being sustainable..
petroleum corporations have controlled the economy for too long, now that petroleum is being used up at a faster rate by SUV culture, the same corporations are attempting to controll alternative energy like natural gas, solar, hydrogen etc..
Venezuala is being targeted by US military 4 petroleum and Bolivia 4 natural gas, buildup of US troops in Haiti seems to indicate an interest in petroleum reserves offshore in del mar de Caribe. Haiti is a location that provides the military with greater control of sea traffic..
