Liquid Natural Gas Proposal Goes to Critical Vote
Eureka City Council to vote on Liquid Natural Gas proposal.
The proposal to construct a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import facility heads to a critical vote this Tuesday, March 16th before the Eureka City Council, when it will consider giving Calpine Corporation the option of buying public land on Humboldt Bay for this controversial plan.
A growing number of citizens are becoming concerned about the serious safety, security, environmental, and economic impacts with this facility. Calpine and its proponents are now attempting to downplay these concerns, telling the public that an "independent study" will review these issues and the City will have an "off-ramp" to exit the agreement at its discretion. However, the "independent study" outlined in the current agreement is anything but independent, and the purported "off-ramp" is a poorly worded and dangerous contract for the public.
This vote has implications for everyone in the region, and it is absolutely critical that local officials hear from everyone who lives and works in the area and/or cares about Humboldt Bay. Please call and write today and tell them to say no to this bogus plan! Please tell them that if any "study" is to go forward, it must be truly independent and must be concluded prior to any land agreement is signed with Calpine. More information on this agreement follows, as well as the latest relevant news and other information.
