Pictures: Madeleine Albright In Berkeley

by Z
On Wednesday February 11th, Madeleine Albright spoke at Cody's Books in Berkeley. Several people protested outside and one person inside was briefly detained with a pie, but most of the crowd seemed to be supportive of Albright and asked her relatively nonpolitical questions. One person did ask a question related to civilian deaths resulting from the US bombing of Sudan, and Albright responded that few civilians were killed and then added that all efforts were taken to avoid such deaths during the bombings (words that almost echoed word for word the way the Bush administration has dealt with similar questions). In her main speech Albright stated that she would have supported the Iraq war more if the US had gotten international backing, but she avoided any direct criticism of the war, Bush, or her successor, Collen Powell (whose statements on Iraq and other wars sound all too similar to her own).

In a "60 Minutes" Interview on May 12, 1996, Lesley Stahl asked then Secretary of State Albright about US sanctions on Iraq. "We have heard that a half million children have died. I mean, that's more children than died in Hiroshima. And -- and you know, is the price worth it?" Madeleine Albright responded "I think this is a very hard choice, but the price -- we think the price is worth it." On Kosovo, so determined was she that nothing would get in the way of military action that she asked Congress to cancel its March 11 debate on the subject, claiming that it could cause divisions within NATO.

Democraps = murder abroad through bombs and sanctions
Democraps = murder at home through the death penalty

Vote non-corporate parties or organize against Ds and Rs and their corporate pimps in general.

Don't be fooled by the Democrap Executioners posing as saviors from the Moron Devil. It's all murder, whichever way you slice it.

I was at that. It was interesting, because most of the audience were democrat sycophants who had bought her book, but there were a lot of people afterwards saying "darn, nobody really did anything, or asked her any really challenging questions". And it's true, I didn't ask a challenging question, and she got away with offering these explanations that should only go over with people with no knowledge of history or world affairs. She just described Barak vs. Arafat as men with PMS who just don't know how to compromise. She said she was proud of the U.S.'s record in avoiding civilian casualties in Iraq. -- but just like with Daniel Pipes yesterday on campus, does she think that nobody else is aware that the U.S. helped install Saddam Hussein as an anticommunist dictator, and he was even on the payroll of the CIA where they wanted him to assassinate Iraq's leader Assam (sp?) a few decades ago. So much for blaming all the civilian deaths on Saddam Hussein, when he is the U.S.'s dictator.
She also seemed to support the 'great people of history' notion, where the particular ideas and personalities of leaders are supposed to be crucial for the turns of events in history, so one should study biographies of leaders - this would be the opposite of Howard Zinn's theme that the cumulative effects of small unknown people creates history.
There were a few people who couldn't get in outside protesting.

there should have been a crowd large enough and loud enough to shut this event down. i suppose you can't say anything about a democratic mass murderer. afterall, anyone but bush! right???

tell it to the families of 500,000 dead children.

First, many thanks to the few who did picket this war criminal and good Democrat, Madeleine Albright.

As to the lack of a mass picket, who dropped the ball? If I lived in the East Bay and had time at Noon on a Wednesday, I would have picketed this outrage of having a war criminal at Cody's, which is certainly no place for fascists, like Madeleine Albright. There are more than enough peace movement people in the East Bay available at this time to provide a decent picket. This stinking Democrat, just like all the other Democratic Party warmongers, death penalty promoters, Israel supporters, Ariel Sharon endorsers, pro-bombing of Afghanistan "liberal" Democrats, fascist-"Patriot" Act Democrats, illegal Pledge of Allegiance worshipers, anti-abortion Democrats, anti-gay marriage Democrats, the entire Democratic Party that supported the fascist illegal mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom, all Republicans, and all other supporters of capitalism should be picketed.

Never again, sisters and brothers! We are all proud of the Bay Area because we all exercise our free speech rights wherever and whenever possible. That's why we live here.

after being introduced, the first thing albright said was (not exact quote, from my memory):

"thank you, thank you. it's so refreshing to be in friendly territory. as you know, washington is a toxic environment these days."

oh, by the way, so many people showed up to listen to this mass murderer that there weren't enough seats, so her fans filled the bottom floor of the bookstore as well. mostly young women -- aspiring mass murderers i suppose.

That is cool that someone brought a pie. I couldn't figure out what those police were doing.

Why do I own a copy of her book?
I think a lot of democrats just aren't so informed. The common understanding on the street is that Albright is probably a 'liberal' because she was in the Clinton administration, and people have never been told by newspapers what went on during the Clinton administration in terms of foreign policy. Ask some of your coworkers how many countries the U.S. intervened in during the 92 to '00 period. People think she's a great feminist example, and she said she considers herself such. My retired aunt gave me her book for x-mas, and she's really liberal. She was even at this event here, and she's on an oxygen tank for emphysema and had to run across a field to avoid the cloud of pepper spray that the police http://www.rockymountainbullhorn.com/Archives/March%202003/violenceLies_0303.html
For the record, there was an announcement of this protest on the indybay calendar:
https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2004/02/03/29863.php
It was posted 8 days ahead, which should have been enough time for most Berkeley activists to see it and act on it. Moreover, there was a news article on indybay posted 11 days ahead of the protest, with lots of discussion:
https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2004/01/31/16691701.php?show_comments=1
So there wasn't any good reason that I can see for the small turnout.
