In conjunction with the 12th annual Computers, Freedom & Privacy conference which takes place this week in San Francisco from April 16-19th, The Electronic Frontier Foundation presents the Pioneer awards in recognition of substantial technical, social, economic, or cultural contributions to computer-based communications 8-930pm at the Japanese Pavillion of the Cathedral Hill Hotel, SF http://www.eff.org/awards/pioneer.html#about This year's winners are: 1. Dan Gillmor, technology columnist for the San Jose Mercury News considered one of the most influential journalists in his field 2. Beth Givens, founder and director of the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse(est 1992), the only complaint/information hotline on informational privacy issues. She is the author of books on privacy rights and preventing identity theft. 3. Jon Johansen and the writers of DeCSS. As a teenager, the Norwegian wrote a program to enable playing DVD movies on Linux and released the source code worldwide. Linux had not been possible under the MPAA encryption scheme. The MPAA filed charges leading to his been charged as a criminal hacker in Norway, the trial is scheduled for this June. This event is free and open to the public.
