For a California Anarchist Gathering in 2004!

by Calanarcho (modanarcho [at] yahoo.com)
Through the "California Anarchist/Anti-Authoritarian Yellow Pages", we are hoping to put together a Anarchist Conference/Gathering in 2004, representing all tendencies, and with spreakers, workshops, and other events worth traveling for!
For a California Anarchist Gathering in 2004!

Hello,
This is a copy of the email that was created for a couple of purposes. It came together while creating a large list of all anarchist groups, collectives, and anti-authoritarian projects in this state. The emails that have been compiled are the result of that list, and with this list we hope that you can use to further your networking, and also to find new contacts for events, and projects. Beyond networking, we are hoping that through this email list, we can create a large anarchist/anti-authoritarian gathering sometime next year, (after the SF Anarchist Book Fair, possibly in summer), covering topics relating to our movement, and covering information worth traveling far and wide for.

Ideas Include: FTAA Report Back, APOC Conference Report, John Zerzan Speaking?, Cascadia Media Collective Workshop, Stop Huntington Animal Cruelty Tactics, Black Blocs, Next Step?, Earth First in Orange County, Class War Prisoners, Food Not Bombs Struggles, Re-Wilding ala Primitivist, Starting a Union via IWW, A West Coast NEFAC?, Building a Website, ect.

As well as...

We also hope to have a website up and running that will include message boards, and an Indymedia type of news posting system, and message boards. We hope to create a space for California Anarchists/Anti-Authoritarians to come together and share news about events, so we can make it easier for ourselves to try and organize.

About this listing...

Firstly this listing is comprised of lots of different kinds of groups. From anarchist collectives like DAAA, and Bay Area Anarchists, to anti-authoritarian groups like Food Not Bombs, Anti-Racist Action, and Critical Mass, and also publications and organizations like AK Press, No Compromise, and Killing King Abacus.

We will see where this takes us. Please email us back with your ideas about creating a Anarchist/Anti-Authoritarian gathering/conference in 2004, and creating some sort of online Infoshop to help organize and network.

Thank you !

i'm confused. the headline asks about an anarchist gathering, but most of those invited are food not bombs groups. fnb, while providing a useful service, is not an anarchist group or network, nor has it ever claimed to be. what gives? are there so few groups in california that identify as anarchist? or is it that it's to be a gathering of the group-affiliated only? just asking.
by historian
There already is an annual anarchist gathering in California. It's called the SF Anarchist Book Fair. Ever heard of it?
by what does that mean
One can find right wing Republican groups that identify as anarcho-capitalists and a good number of self described leftwing anarchists support small businesses and oppose government regulation of them. People tend to act in their own self interest, so its not surprising that outside of the crusty punks anarchism is mainly a movement of the petite bourgeoisie. I am always surprised to hear militant anarchists describing themselves as anti-capitalist when for the most part anarchists support a prebigbusiness version of capitalism.

Left anarchism basically means "more radical than though" but not "communist". The antiauthoritarian and mutual aid references in many definitions are pretty meaningless (like defining Christian as being humble and helping those in need). Anarchists will still support temporary dictators like Makhno and are sectarian enough that most see certain strains of anarchism they disagree with as more of an enemy than Capitalism..
by isnt that sweet of him
"Even as a general he was an anti-authoritarian at heart. "
I heard Castro was an anti-authoritarian at heart too. He feels bad whenever he is forced to arrest a dissident and has even been heard to say "this hurts me more than it hurts you" before he has them punished.
by ah ha
" It also leaves out groups like the ALF, and their political wing"

I knew anarchism had something to do with agreeing with Nessie. Just to make things less confusing for anarchists who support animal rights, how about we use nessieism in place of anarchism? The OED definition of anarchism is vague and it was used long before the white male anarchist prophets of the 1800s started to redefine it to mean various things (none of which agreed). The only consistent thing between all of its meaning is opposition to government, but since government is hard to define (an elected general with a staff for example is obviously not a government in Makhno's case), perhaps anarchism should just be defined as opposition to a current government?
by Susie-Q (kewsusan [at] hotmail.com)
Critical Mass- First off, critical mass is a movement or a happening, but it is not and never has been an organization.
Secondly, I think it's a bad idea to post listserv addresses in this listing.
Third, Bikes Not Bombs isn't happening anymore. At least, not on a daily basis.

RTS- East Bay Reclaim the Streets no longer has a voicemail. rts_eastbay [at] yahoo.com is the email address. That group no longer exists, but some people do check the email from time to time.

ARA (Anti-Racist Action): the contact info listed here is 4 years old. Atty. Larry Hildes no longer has a Berkeley office. I can't provide a current email address right now, but I'm pretty sure we haven't had that vm number for four years. There are ARA'ers here but no official chapter that I'm aware of. Check out http://www.aranet.org/

Some of the Bay Area groups that are listed aren't specifically based in the city under which they are listed. It might be cool to see the Video Activist Network listed in there (videoactivism.org). Also check out passionbomb's list of groups- there are a few that aren't listed here.

I have a weird feeling about calling for this thing through the yellow pages. I guess it almost feels like they want to find people through groups. The problem is that a lot of people are not affiliated with groups. I'm glad they posted here, cuz I think that a lot of unaffiliated people will hear about it thru Indymedia.
by government
Thats the definition. But tell me again how Makhno's army didnt act like a government for those in it?
Government is a rather vague concept and to claim an army with a "staff" isnt acting like a government seems strange. Makhno may have been a good and moral leader who had the support of his followers (perhaps like Castro) but thats besides the point.

"Wrong. The word doesn’t mean “against government,” it means “without government.” That is quite a different thing. "

Anarchism's anticapitalist side was mainly a result of white males in Europe redefining the term in the late 1800s to mean something similar to Communist. Later anarchism briefly broadened out and included many female labor organizers but it's always depressing see Emma Goldman brought up as a token of how anarchists are not sexist when anarchofundamentalists always seem to quote Makhno, Malatesta, Bakunin, and even Kropotkin, but rarely bother to quote her writings. Goldman was supportive of the early Soviet state before Kronstadt and most of her writings don't have nearly the dogmatic quality one finds in the writings of the more puritanical prophets. Its also funny that while anarchofundamentalists hate reformists they are so tied to the word anarchism that they overlook the actual politics of a Kropotkin or Chomsky (who is in most ways a Social Democrat who seems to want something a little to the left of modern day Sweden)

Before anarchism was redefined to mean Communist there were people like Proudhon who called himself an anarchist but can hardly be described as anticapitalist. Use of the actual word "anarchism" in English predates even its meaning as being for a society without government (the earliest usages occurding to the OED seem to suggest the "modern" negative meaning was in fact the original definition). When people start arguing over which ideas and movements really are or are not "anarchist" I start to feel like Im surrounded by Christians arguing about which sect is really "Christain". Arguing whether animals rights activists have a right to call themselves anarchists is kinda like arguing whether it more Chirtsian to own a Mac or a PC.
If you put a bandaid on a tumor, you'll die.
by calanarcho (modanarcho [at] yahoo.com)
The anarchist bookfair in San Fran. is a good place to go to meet other groups, but it's goal is simply to bring anarchists together to sell books and other items.

The goal of a conference or a gathering would be to talk about different tactics, goals, and to look in depth into what other groups are doing.

Things like Indymedia, FNB, or ARA, while not sometimes outright "anarchist" are anti-authoritarian in the sense that they are autonomous collectives linked through networks based upon ideals of free association. Many anarchists and anti-authoritarians are also involved in groups like these, and this list could be a good reasourse for people looking to hook up with other like minded activists.

While one poster is right, we don't want to rely on just people involved in groups to create a gathering/conference, it's a good starting point. One person can't get something like this off the ground, and the mass email list that has been created has helped to get the word out.

This call has been posted on most anarchists sites, (Infoshop, Ainfos, SFBay Anarchists, Raise the Fist, FNB News, ect), and hopefully others not involved in groups can know what is going. The internet is a horrible medium however for getting the word out sometimes; and thus activists learning about this event need to get the word out to other people.

The next step for this thing now is to find a place where we are going to do this thing. Modesto? Sacramento? Bay Area? Fresno?

Anarchist Gathering in theroy is like an agoreaphobic convention, both are a funny idea, but have no basis in reality.

it might be more aptly named the bay area moron's convention (yes?)

Self described anarchists not only support organization but many such as Chomsky and Makhno support a level of organization that would even be called a government by normal people.

Anarchism mean many different things to different people. To Nessie, it seems to mean opposition to animal rights. To Qaddafi (yes he considers himself an anarchist and wrote a book on anarchism called the Green Book) it means a dictatorship (of course as in Makhno's case Qaddafi claims to only have power over the army while the popular assemblies have ultimate power)
