Bay Area Activist wounded in Cancún

by Karen Martin
bruised3.jpg
The date was Wednesday, Sept. 10th. It was about 2pm. The fence was down, and Indymedia photographer Karen Martin was surveying the damage, luckily without camera in hand. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a rock came straight at her (from the police side of the fence) and hit her in the glasses, at the bottom corner of her eye. As you can see from the first photo, the damage was visible within 5 minutes after the blow.

Medics from Mexico and the US helped Karen as soon as she was removed from the crowd. Karen is convalescing, looking around for sources of ice, and planning her next actions in Cancún, while trying to not blink too often.

Seems like throwing rocks is the cops way down there, as opposed to bumping with motorcycles, or shooting with wooden dowels.

When did someone with the ImC throw a rock at the police? You're making stuff up

i feel bad for this person who got hit with a rock by la chota. the thing is in mexico there is plenty of unemployement, so those hired as police officers are not always well trained. that is why when in mexico you must be hip as to what the pigs are up to. "3rd world" countries who have been consistently pimped by the united snakes have serious corruption issues, sometimes this manifests itself in law enforcement. get hip to la chota, they can really f*ck up your day.

A bit more from Karen about her injury

That rock came straight at me, horizontally, whereas all the other stuff that I had been seeing go over the fence in both directions (including police batons, some of which were not returned, I might add) had gone in an arc. That cop had really good aim- I am wondering if he was a retired baseball player.

I agree with grad{s statement that a lot of the federales and others had become pigs because it was the only job available. You should have seen them, so small (short and skinny) and innocent looking. However, their superiors are not so innocent, nor are the thousands of agents from the US and other countries who were there and probably told them to throw the rock at me.

My injury could have been a lot worse, and I recognize that I was lucky that my glasses protected me and Arnica has helped me heal so well.

It is hard for me to feel bad for myself about the eye when, based on my personal experiences, I{ve seen that the people in Cancun, and I would assume the rest of Mexico, don{t all have running water, or safe drinking water, or safe food to eat. Hopefully taking the WTO and FTAA out of the mix will be steps in the direction of people taking back their own lives and making them better.
