Sacramento Police are gearing up for the upcoming events and protests surrounding next week's "Ministerial Conference and Expo on Agricultural Science and Technology." Local police have been training with guns that shoot pepper spray bullets, they've increased baton use training, and conducted crowd control maneuvers, including group trainings with downtown bicycle officers to control and disperse crowds. In addition, out of town police officers, not familiar with our community, have been brought in for next week.
We must protect our first amendment rights of Free Speech and our safety by sending a clear message to Mayor Fargo that we expect her to:
Give specific instructions to the Police Chief and all city Police to respect the rights and safety of all people, including and especially protesters.
Instruct all police officers to treat the public and protesters with professionalism, courtesy and respect.
Convey unequivocally to city police that the use of excessive force will not be tolerated.
Please call Mayor Fargo's office today at (916) 808-5300 and tell her to protect free speech (and if you're a constituent and/or voted for, you might want to let her know that also).

but please note that there have already been local efforts to persuade the police to handle the situation professionally
Supposedly, Sacramento hasn't used tear gas for crowd control since the early 1970s. No one is enthusiastic about doing it now.
Local business people in the downtown area are concerned that a police overreaction could drive away business (most of them make money off state workers like myself on Monday through Friday), or result in serious property damage.
The Sacramento Police Department is not run by political cronies, like SF, or by people with a fetish for paramilitary behaviour, like Oakland.
The joker in the deck is, of course, the federal government. If it is in control, who knows what will happen? Call to Fargo just might persuade her to stand up to federal demands for aggressive action against protesters.

There is talk on the Yahoo boards about running over protestors.
Check it out, you will need to create a Yahoo profile to make comments.
Please help.

Sacto people aren't rednecks, but I did encounter one at a Sacto critical mass. He jumped out of his car and assaulted someone,a nd then ran over someone's bike as he got away. i had my video camera (which I will bring this Sunday) and filmed the event, but the rider who had his bike run over turned out to have some mental troubles or differences, where first he was totally angry and said he wanted to send the assaulted/hit&run guy to jail for life on three strikes, and was angry at us when we couldn't agree, and then he didn't even file charges because he couldn't focus long enough. But anyway, the Sacramento police are definitely prone to theatrical excess, with 10 police cars with 2-4 police each, plus a helicopter following 20 bikes in the bike lane, but they aren't like Oakland police. They're probably not going to shoot - but they have written many tickets for made up laws like not having a red blinker on your bike (no such law exists) and they threw someone in jail for no reason when she was just watching the ticketing process of someone else.

Actually,
Bob Thomas (the city manager) is the police chief's "boss" and he's the one who would convey the order for your demands. The vast majority of mayors (in Ca. at least) are more like the kings and queens in england (largely ceremonial titles). Mayors may be elected but they are really not the ones who run Ca. cities, it is the city managers. Be warned though, SPD is an organization that prides itself on its Mission Oriented attitude its officers live by. If lawfully ordered to bring the hat they will. I should know, I'm one of them :) Good luck to all and if you wanna dance, well then, lets dance !
