On June 12, 2003 at 9:30 a.m., the Budget Committee of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors will decide on election-frauding, anti-tenant "mayor" Willie Brown's proposal to eliminate paid ballot arguments, a key means of reaching the workingclass voters. We need your phone calls, E-mails & faxes now to save paid ballot arguments in the SF Voter Handbook.
The excuse is the cost, but in fact, the paid ballot arguments are just 1/4 of the Voter Handbook and make it by far the best and most important election information guide, useful to everyone. Most of the Voters' Handbook consists of text of the laws being amended. When the Repeal of Rent Control, Prop R, was on the ballot in Nov. 2002, the elections department had to reprint the entire subdivision code that Willie Brown and his anti-tenant friends, like the Prop R supporters Supervisors Gavin Newsom, Tony Hall and Bevan Dufty, wanted amended. Prop R was defeated with 60% of the voters opposing it, saving the homes of the 2/3 of San Francisco voters who are tenants, and who by definition are overwhelmingly workingclass.
The Budget Committee consists of Supervisors Daly, Peskin, Maxwell, Ma & Gonzalez. This proposal should be defeated in committee.
Regardless of your district, you can and must call all the supervisors as they all vote on the budget. They all have voice mail so you can leave message at any time. They all also have fax and E-mail.

thanks for posting. keeping paid arguments out is another parting shot at SF voters by hiz willieness. I will gladly call and write supes.
all SFers should call or write the board of supes to protect this cheap alternative to expensive mailers/slate cards/field campaigns...ballot notices are most useful to under-dog candidates, and slate measures that are grassroots in nature.
don't let big money and powerful political action groups dominate elections. Ballot notes are a way for common citizens to post their opinions without being drowned out by big money campaigns and big business hiding behind clever community sounding PAC names.

Direct Action from the Comfort of Your Home!
Make some calls on behalf of ballot arguments useful to underdog candidates and underdog community activists.
Ballot arguments is a way to get marginalized, under-dog opinions out to each potential voter
for those of us trying to build community while big-business republicans destroy from within, the fight against big-money campaigns is always up-hill. SF Voters deserve differing opinions from folks who can't afford TV, print, mail ads.
don't let big-money, big-business influence our voting pamphlets and voter infomation.
Make some calls, send an e-mail, make a difference however small.

Act Locally!
Please lend some time to save ballot arguments.
many of us rely on this to combat the high finance hype that marginalizes positions and opinions coming from community leaders doing the good work--those who are truly active in our communities, and are always fighting for the rights of the working class, poor, and disenfranchised.
Get involved in the minor details community groups face everyday--fighting city hall for our right to be heard.
Anarchists should call too! An injury to one is an injury to all.

Hola Lamar There's always room to grow, thanks.
As an afterthought, yeah, could be seen as a joke, but no, actually a poke.

This is Important!
please join the efforts to save ballot arguments...underdogs, those of us involved in actual everyday struggle of community building, community activism, and progressive politics rely on this cheap alternative to combat big-time media ads, slick campaign hype, and mis-information spouting forth form conservative political action groups pretending to be grassroots organizations.

please call or write SF supes and urge them to keep ballot arguments.
Ballot arguments is a forum for underdogs to get their opinion seen by voters---opinions otherwise marginalized by big money hype, slick campaign ads.
Doing away with ballot arguments will further enable the conservative power elite to silence dissenting voices.
