Especially coming from California Peace Action, Direct Action to Stop the War, Global Exchange, International ANSWER, Peninsula Peace and Justice Center, and the South Bay Mobilization considering that the past month or two they were creating signs that said No War For Oil/SUV’s?

perhaps if you and your "libertarian" friends helped fight for efficient and viable public transit alternatives there'd be less of a need to rely on cars.

How about a call for fuel-efficient vehicles to carpool the 1-mile instead of SUV’s and Vans? The net fuel efficiency using 33mpg 5 passenger cars is better than 10mpg 8 passenger SUVs.

How about a critical mass and cycling the 1 mile? Hey there was even a time when people walked 1 mile, that might be an interesting concept.

And yes we are a car driven society, but Caltrans gets you within a half a mile of United Defense which is pretty damn good. But as you’ve proven time and time again, you only practice what you preach when it’s convenient. And obviously 1 mile from the Lafayette and El Camino Real meeting spot or the half-mile from the Santa Clara Station is too much of an inconvenience for you to practice what you preach.

Oh and some more helpful advice, from either of these meeting spots you only use surface streets and this way you can avoid my “scornful scowls” from 101.

what's this talk about a 1-mile trek? for a large number of people intending to go to this protest, this thing is far more than 1-mile away.

for many who want to attend and not lose a full day's work taking a car is a virtual necessity.

if people want to do a critical mass, more power to them. for many many people, for all sorts of reasons, biking is not an option however.

BTW, i don't think that these wars are for "our" SUV culture, although cheaper fuel MAY be an outcome. it's more accurate in my view to say these wars are being fought for the maintenance of the capitalist system of accumulation with the US ruling class as the continued hyper/super-power. oil, of course, is part of this.

i rarely drive a car, and would consider the use of energy efficient transit to be preferable, but i'm not gonna advocate hog-tying ourselves to methods of transport that are a recipe for a poorly attended event.

Aaron, The 1 mile came from Direct Action Against the War/The Poster directly: “If you have a van or SUV, call 408-998-8504 to help with shuttling people to the protest site (only 1 mile away).” The 2-meeting/staging areas for the United Defense Protest are within 1 mile and they requested vans or SUV’s to serve as shuttles to the protest. Many of the organizers have advocated a No War for Oil and a banning of SUVs in favor of more fuel-efficient vehicles viewpoint. But now that they have a need for transportation for 1 mile, SUV’s are now on there ok list? And you don’t see any irony in this at all because you’re afraid the net result would be a poorly attended event? If one believes in an issue so strongly, then one will support that regardless of it being inconvenient. As the organizers have proven, anyone can give lip service to an issue, but their call for SUV’s shows how truly dedicated they are to their cause. This lunacy is identical to the hypocritical Catholic Church preaching morality while they sweep child abuse by their priest under the table.

Soothsayer Slayer, I don’t need to use alternative identities to defend my viewpoint; I can defend it fine under this name. A faithful follower, you’re nothing more. No cares for self-examination or expansion of your mind beyond what you’re told. Of course you think I need to seek counseling, because I dare to ask the question why and point out the hypocrisies when I see them regardless of them being conservative or liberal.

Go onto the world and spread your master’s gospel like a good faithful follower, no questions, nor concerns, and without thoughts of asking why. If SUVs and pickup trucks are actually used for their real purpose, hauling stuff or large numbers of people around, that's fine. What I personally object to about SUVs is how people buy them just for their "macho" image. If you have a large family, an SUV or station wagon is not such a bad idea. If you are single or are a couple, it's idiotic.

So here, if the SUVs are used to transport a lot of people, that's fine. But as it's only half a mile from Caltrain most people can and should walk it.
