121 Youth Escape Brazilian Detention Centre
April 15, 2003

On April 12, 2003, 121 inmates escaped from the Franco da Rocha juvenile detention cente in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Police used helicopters and dogs to search the area for the escaped youth. Three days later, on Tuesday, April 15, after 65 inmates had been recaptured, the detained youth staged a brief rebellion inside the centre. Police rounded up the youth for inspection in a courtyard and stripped them naked. According to the BBC there have been 50 escapes and riots in Brazilian jails so far this year.

This is something that I've only had tangential contact with over the years, but the recent documentary at the San Francisco International Film Festival, BUS 174, is a truly frightening examination of this theme.

BUS 174 looks into the background behind a bus hijacking in July 2000 in Rio de Janeiro. Turns out the hijacker had been a street kid who was almost killed by the police several years earlier when they killed 7 people sleeping outside a church.

By time the film is over, an entire society has been indicted. Catch this movie if you ever get the chance to do so.
