SF Supervisor Tony Hall
Phone SF Supe Tony Hall's office and demand that he retract his call for tough prosecution of anti-war protesters.
There is an interesting article in the March 25 SF Examiner where city supervisor Tony Hall calls for tough prosecution of all anti-war protesters (page 5 top).
Unbelievably, there is one paragraph that reads: "Asked what he thought of civil rights disobedience during the civil rights and Vietnam war protests of the 1960s, Hall said disrupting the lives of others is always inappropriate." If folks like Tony Hall had their way, there would still be segregated bathrooms and restaurants.
Hall's tough talk and "hammer the protesters" rhetoric is obviously unacceptable. If Hall got his way many activists would be rotting in the city jail. Those who plan on attending Tuesday's Board of Supes meeting should definitely point out Hall's draconian stance. And EVERYONE should call his office and complain.
Hall's number at city hall is 415-554-6516. Flood his phone lines!
Tell Tony Hall his positions are unacceptable!

And, I guess, right wing disruption of lives around the world IS appropriate?
This guy is priceless!

Everyone should send him an email with pics of war victims asking him to stop the disruption of THEIR lives.
I called Tony Hall and expressed my outrage that he supports a police state for San Francisco. I told him that this is San Francisco, and we will fucking protest here or overthrow this government. I don't know where these conservative bastards come from, but we need to get them out. I encourage everyone to call. At a time like this, all the pressure we can exert helps.
FOR REVOLUTION,
FOR THE SAN FRANCISCO FREEZONE

Does Mr. Tony Hall want a demonstration in front of his house?
That's a great idea, if anyone could find his home. I believe his district is outer Richmond by the beach. In any case, tell everyone you know to call his office or send e-mail.
Where is Tony Hall's home? Yeah that's just like Ghandi and Marin Luther King, to whom your group often compare yourselves. They went around and harassed and intimidated people in their homes.
No they were not thugs. YOu have no right to call yourselves peace activists. I know the war is wrong and it should be stopped now, but the response it NOT to bring more grief and misery to people here in San Francisco.

The person posting about Tony Hall's home is called an "agent provacateur" trying to discredit a movement by forcing it in embarassing directions.
Tony Hall's proposal has a few major problems that will make it unreasonable and in probably unpassable. One is that if it passes protesters can do jail time in place of the fine; does the SFPD really want to reclog the jail system. Secondly, half of the arrests were illegal (protesters rounded up on the sidewalk) and that can be proven from video and photos on the scene; trying to fine protesters for illegal arrests will result in a huge number of court cases costing the city even more money. Tony Hall is not serious, but is instead trying to use this issue as a rallying point for a right wing base (much like Newsom and his attacks on the homeless)

I just got back from the Board meeting.
First off, I asked Chris Daly when the Supes would vote on Hall's resolution. He kinda rolled his eyes and said 'it would never see the light of day.'
I think it's just rhetoric for Hall's constituents.
The meeting was great. About 30 people spoke about their experiences of being brutalized by the cops and appealed to the Supes to protect the citizens from a police force that is clearly out of bounds and needs a time out.
The Supes agreed to conduct an inquiry into the allegations of brutality and the lack of fiscal responsibility on the part of the SFPD.
Debate on other subjects went on for a long time and public comment didn't start until after 5pm. There were 3 or 4 comments, then the Board had to recess for over an hour for a mass gay wedding which took place in the main rotunda.
We reconvened well after 6pm and the quarom of Supes who remained gave the speakers an attentive and respectful audience.
Supervisors Ammiano, Daly, Dufty, Gonzalez, Hall, Ma, Maxwell, and McGoldrick remained.
Supervisor Hall, to his credit, listened closely to the speakers and accepted their pointed comments about his resolution.
During the recess, there was a small demonstration of about 30 protesters that passed in front of City Hall under the watchful eyes of no less than 2 helicopters, 30 motorcycle cops, and as many more SFPD riot cops. That fact was reported to the Supes when we reconvened and I think it made an impression. (Fiscal irresponsibility!)
There was one KPIX reporter before the recess. There was another from 'Counterpunch' who was there the entire time and even commented eloquently to the Board after the recess.
Kudos to the speakers.
This is what democracy looks like!
Peace.
