Willard middle school in Berkely locked gates and threatened students planning on walking out today

A student organized walk-out at willard middle school in berkely was banned by the school board and teachers and administraters discouraged and threatened students not to participate. the students were locked onto school grounds(is this legal?) , closeing and locking all surrounding gates and threatening students with suspention. The students were discouraged and scared, but are planning on a suprise walk -out thursday. they need support and the school needs to hear from the community that this is not acceptable. quote on sid eof school-"if children reared in an atmosphere of lovelessness and oppression, children whose potency has been frusterated, do not manage during their youth to take the path of authentic rebellion, they will either drift into total indifference, alienated from reality by the authorities and the myths the latter have used to share them; or they may engage in forms of DESTRUCTIVE ACTIONS"- paulo friere

I find it dispicable that administrators and school officials within a school system that has already publicly supported students' and faculty's right to protest the war is doing something as repressive as denying their students that right - this is a progressive school, no less! These kids are only acting on what they are learning in the classroom, and then there own administration bullies and intimidates them with scare tactics! (Not to mention the danger and illegality involved in locking children inside of a building!) And this also puts teachers who support the children in a compromising position, where they are made to look like hypocrites for fear of losing their jobs! Either the school needs to publicly state that it against freedom to assemble and freedom to speak out against tyranny, or it needs to shut its mouth and let the students express themselves. What total bullshit. Power to the teachers and students that risked anyway...

All for protest and free speech but..

The school acts in loco parente (legal guardian) when the kids are in school. Kids can not be just let free to run without parental custody. Even if it is the PC thing to do..

Middle school kids don't know dick and just want an excuse to jet. 7-9 grade have no rights or experience as adults, schools "illegally" make kids go to class daily. Middle school kids need to be studying algebra, geometry, and eatting shitty cafeteria food not learning how to be political activists. Next the elementary school kids will be emolating themseves in the halls...
