Random Searches, Harrassment, Assault by Racist Police "Gangs" in SF

by mark (mark [at] indymedia.org)
At the Jan. 8th SF Police Commission hearing, Thurgood Marshall students and other community members spoke out against racist harrassment, searches and assaults by police, which disproportionately target blacks and latinos. Enrique, a City College student and long-time Mission resident, discusses how the city could reign in police "gangs" by banning random searches.

Whoever was in that video is obviouly an idiot. If the police are going to search you anyway (as you claim) then why are you wasting your breath in an effort to stop consent searches?
The only people who get "harassed" by the police are the criminals. The best way to judge how effective a police department is by how much the criminals complain.
Keep up the good work SFPD. If you dont like it dont get arrested, is the too hard?

Too bad, binky. You lost your bike out of your own stupidity, which isn't all that surprising. That wouldn't have happened to me. And don't so some stupid sh*t like:

>That wouldn't have happened to me.

Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah...........

It wouldn't have. Period. No matter what you say. If I got T-boned, and its the other drivers fault, the police should "tow" my bike off the street to allow traffic to get back to normal. That day, I assure you, I'm on the phone to my attorney. He'd deal with it. No one's keeping my scoot. If you didn't call your attorney, that's your own fault. If you don't have an attorney, lesson learned. Get one. But a 50 yr old should be bright enough and should have made preparations ahead of time to take care of himself and his possessions. Given what happened, it appears that you're deficient in that department.

nessie needs to hear the truth

The Police don't insist on impounding a vehicle that has been in an accident unless:

a) The registration has expired
b) proper ownership of vehicle cannot be determined (no paperwork)

Why don't you tell us the entire story ??/

My audience was in the scores of thousands at the very lowest. I was just starting to break a hundred thousand a column before the next column came out. Of course, all the old ones continued to draw hits. They still do, and they are still being reposted, even the old ones. <<<<

I think that you are kidding yourself if you believe that you are being persecuted due to your exposes...I doubt seriously, if anybody in any position of authority has actually read them or even heard of you. I went to your website and read some of your articles...Pretty much the same old paranoid, conspiracy theory rhetoric that thousands of other nitwits are spewing...I saw nothing new or even thought provoking...sorry...but you need to get a grip...

>>I was robbed, essentially at gun point, under color of law.

You were not. You're dumb as a fu*cking rock! You lost your bike because you're dumb as a f*cking rock! You should have called your attorney. Ever heard of a damn phone?? Lesson learned. A 50 yr old who so f*cking stupid he doesn't know to call his lawyer. You deserved to lose it. Dumba**!
by MC
>>Then how dumb would I have been?

Let's not go there. It pains to to think about how dumb you are NOW!!

You lost a $6000 bike cause you or some friend helping you didn't pick up the phone and call an attorney charging $200/hr to have you sign a Power of Attorney and allow him to act on your behalf and retreive your scoot. If a teeny bopper or someone in their young 20's did that, I could see where they didn't know they could. At 50+, you should know better. You didn't. The label fits!!

I guess you didn't know that the person who hit you, if they had insurance, their insurance company would need to pay for your medical expenses. Did you know that?? If so, how'd you know that and not know you could hire an attorney to act on your behalf regarding your scoot? Half-wit!!
by MC
Power of Attorney to my friend? HAHAHAHA

The Attorney himself had gone down, he'd have gotten the scoot. Lawyers talk to other lawyers in that lawyer speak they do. You could have paid back over time.

Hopefully the bike has gone to an owner who is responsible. It deserved better.

"I live in a police state."

If this is a Police State, then it's "Super Duper X-tra Police State Lite".

Want to know about a Police State? It'll tell what a Police State is like, and I mean a "man's man" kind of Police State, not some wimpy Police State.

In a REAL Police State, if you want to travel from SF to LA to visit or on business, you would have to file with the government for a "Travel Permit". You would be asked the reason for your visit and what you intend on doing. If approved, you would be given the route you will take, the time you will leave, the time you are expected to arrive, and the time and date you are expected to depart in order to return and the time you are expected back in SF. In the city, there would be a minimum of three police officers/military personnel on every street corner and a minimum of two posted on every floor of every building. All guns will have been confiscated. There's more, but that's enough to give you the idea. That's a REAL Police State. Anything short of that is not really a Police State.
by gip
That's like saying, "Only a rabid dog is a dangerous mammal."

No it's not. I give you a REAL Police State, not some whimpy version you've conjured up in on your own. The picture I drew was a Police State with real teeth, real bite. The Police State you say we're living in has way to many freedoms to be considered a Police State. Police State Lite is not really a Police State. Really. Ask around. Go to the Financial District and ask a broker at Merill Lynch or someone of similar occupation. If they say it's a Police State, I'll switch my position.
by ouch
North Korea. North Korea would be a good example of what a police state would likely look like. Is the US anywhere near North Korea? No way. Not even close. Ergo, not a police state.
by Mark
Word on the street is it's not a police state. It's not up to you or people who think like you to decide whether it is or not for the rest of us. In fact, you're the last one's we'll ever look towards for solutions to anything. You are in no position to define anything for anyone other than yourself. If you choose to believe it's a police state, then you are free to do so. Just don't expect the common man to listen to you.

Who paid for your bike, the taxpayers? You sure sound like a cop.

Nah! Just happy that nessie's old bike has a responsible owner now. Of course, whale poop would have been a more responsible owner than him. And smarter too. Course, that's not saying much. Whale poop would have at least called it's lawyer. He wasn't even bright enough to do that.

I don’t even have a bank account. I don’t believe in banks. they’re evil. I refuse to support evil in any way. When I was little, my grandma taught me that banks were the devil’s embassies on earth.
--------
Off topic, but this seems to be particularly true now. Some of my housemates don't have bank accounts and I have to write them checks and pay their utilities. I had to get a bank account to prove that I live in this state, and I was shocked, trying to compare the major banks, that the larger the bank, the more likely that they pay 0.25% interest and it seems like most charge you to even talk to them. Washington mutual is the exception with it's free atms, but the reason they are doing so well is that they have attracted so many people in the bottom 30% income brackets and make billions in fees for overdrafting. You would make out much better keeping your money in a sock, if no one would steal it or if you could pay rent in cash. I went into a credit union that is slightly better and pays .75% interest, but they would only give me a 'young savers' account even though I'm 27, and I always feel like I'm explaining things to the students who work in there - like what a government bond is, or the concept of a 3rd party check.

Beside the point. Law abiding citizens should not have to do a lot of things we have to do. Doesn't excuse not preparing or otherwise sucking up and doing what you'd rather not in order to protect yourself. You didn't. That was really stupid. But I wouldn't expect any less form you.

Thank goodness the bike has a home with someone who's responsible. I could care less if you had died. It's the bike we should all be concerned about. You can be replaced.

My only regret is that I live 3000 miles away and can't get in your face and laugh as I say these things and spit as I talk. I assure you I could piss you off enough to take a swing at me. And that'd be all I need to seal the deal.

Law abiding citizens should not have to protect themselves from the police.

The mission station captain- captain corrales encourages his officers to bust suspected drug dealers for minor offenses, jaywalking, loitering, etc. In the process, innocent people have been picked up- including one of my friends. my friend was walking down 26th street, when he was picked up by an undercover officer. The undercover officer made threats to bust my friend's teeth out if my friend gave him any more attitude- my friend wanted to know what was going on. My friend was then taken to 850 bryant by another officer in a squad car. He was interrogated a few times and held overnight. My friend was not selling any drugs, all he was doing was walking down the street on his way to a friend's house, and yet he was picked up. So who's the real thug in this case and similar ones all over the city and elsewhere?
by eissen
To rob someone the robber must use force or fear to forcibly take the property from the victim. It appears Nessie that you were incapcitated by your own folly (ie:bad motorcycle driving). Thus the most you could have suffered was a theft of your property. Implying that you were robbed is incorrect.

maybe you should think twice about having that last high ball before you ride your motorcycle home from club stud.

I caught the end of an alarming looking story on the traffic report this morning - but I can't find any text renditions in the paper. They seemed to be saying that a trucker stretched a downed wire from a PGE pole across a street in Oakland and numerous motorcyclists ran into it and were hurt, then the trucker ran away?? Are there any reliable reports about this.
I've gotten so many injuries in traffic, almost always due to being doored, that I wear a helmet, but as a cyclist you are far more likely to break a hand or arm or knee or spinal ligament than to hit your head.
by chp
Well now, looking at the sparse information in this sfgate news tidlet, it seems that this mass crash of 6 or 7 motorcyclists occurred on the same road that we were all protesting yesterday evening, only about 4 hours later?? the thing not mentioned in this sfgate story is what the channel 2 people were saying on the 6am traffic report about how a trucker who fled the scene was wanted for doing something to cause the line to be across the road. also, why didn't the later bikers see the earlier bikers and stop, plus there are all sorts of potholes and railroad tracks and boards all over the street which don't cause heavy motorcycles much less bicycles to all fall over. why would they fall when riding over a powerline.

Several motorcyclists were injured in Oakland this morning in a multiple vehicle crash apparently resulting from a damaged power pole, according to Oakland police.

The crash occurred at about 1:30 a.m. in the 1700 block of Middle Harbor Road, and involved up to six or seven motorcycles, according to Officer K. McKellar of the Oakland Police Department.

The motorcycles appear to have crashed after driving over a downed line from the damaged pole, McKellar said.

The bikes' riders suffered minor injuries and were taken to an area hospital.

PG&E has been called to repair the damaged power pole.
