Mayor Dean and her Micki Mouse puppet: funny posters promoting truth in berkeley election
As the November 5 election draws near, dirty campaigning by the right-wing Berkeley candidates is on the increase. This home-made flyer (which requires your own pen to add the touches!) shines a light on some of that corruption while keeping a sense of humor. Big money and dirty politics can be exposed by the grassroots.

This home-made flyer (which requires your own pen to add the touches!) shines a light on some of that corruption while keeping a sense of humor. Weinberg has broken local and federal laws in his campaigning, to gain an unfair advantage over the by-the-book incumbent, Kriss Worthington. He has also falsified endorsements.
The truth is Micki Weinberg is being funded by landlords, using their ill-gotten gains from fleecing students to help this dishonest campaign to oust one of the regions foremost progressive leaders. You can check his campaign contributions at
http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/elections/
Weinberg's campaign has also stooped to hit piece emails which claim that Worthington is a leader of the anti-Israeli forces. The email written in a way that strongly suggests that Worthington was part of anti-semitic attacks in Berkeley. It concludes with a plea for the maximum, $250 donation to Weinberg's campaign. In fact the email is libelous because Worthington works openly for peace and has sponsored anti-hate legislation. In contrast, Weinberg's first words after Mayor Dean appointed him to the Peace and Justice Commission were, "My intention is to abolish this commission". He has been seen berating people holding "Peace in the Middle East" signs at demonstrations. And he publicly organizes to send students to war in Israel, as shown in this Daily Californian article:
http://www.dailycal.org/article.asp?id=8158
This outrage must not stand! Whether you believe in this system, of voting, or not, these abuses are intolerable.
The two PDF files are meant to be printed out and posted around the University of California at Berkeley, particularly the southside area where students are at risk for misinformation from the dirty campaign of Micki Weinberg.
The first flyer is a quiz. It was made by a student not working under the auspices of any campaign. You have to draw the puppet's wires with a pen.
The second flyer is a statement: FUNDED BY LANDLORDS! Here you draw not only the puppet's wires, but also his Mickey Mouse ears. The flyer goes on to talk about how hypocritical and dishonest Mayor Dean is, and how dirty their campaigning has been.
Please post widely.

Don't forget to add those micki mouse ears to the FUNDED BY LANDLORDS!!! flyer.
For those not familiar with Southside, it's the area south of the UC Berkeley campus where lots of students live.

Yes, it is amazing how many contributors Weinberg has gotten from the Dean camp. He is 18 years old, and went to Beverly Hills high school, and according to someone who debated him on the radio, he does not consider the West Bank to be an occupied territory. He said that the Students for Justice in Palestine who held a memorial for two palestinian villages that were slaughtered/emptied out in the 1940s were guilty of a hate crime, because the date of this memorial matched holocaust remembrance day. The students didn't use questionable language or anything.
Neither Shirley Dean nor Tom Bates nor the others named are socialists, so they are not worth the time of day as far as workingclass voters are concerned. This is a falling out among thieves, an ego trip, and in the race to oust Shirley Dean, more than a sprinkling of male chauvinism. Keep away from these bourgeois races and concentrate on the propositions. I suggest East Bay people spend lots of time walking Oakland precincts to pass Just Cause Eviction (Prop EE) and defeat the tax to increase the number of police (Prop FF).
Yo socialist,
I think you should really get a clue about local elections! The list of good things Tom Bates has done in the support of women as a legislator is very long.
Mayor Dean is more like Maggie Thatcher in comparison...you think she represents for women?
Dean runs interference for just about every progressive idea including the living wage and rent control.
Yes Bates is a big politician and the system of voting is a broken system, but the reality of the situation is that voting exists and if everyone who had the power to vote would, keeping in mind that it is absolutely not enough, then a lot more good would be done than simply caring about the propositions only.
Dean worked against Measure Y, Berkeley's most recent version of EE, to protect unjust evictions of seniors and the disabled.

As a Supervisor, Tom:
Sponsored legislation creating the Alameda County Commission on the Status of Women; one of the first in the country.
Helped establish a network of community healthcare facilities to serve low income families including: the Berkeley Woman's Health Collective, Asian Health Services, Asian Mental Health Services, Clinica de la Raza, East Oakland Health Clinic, Over 60 Clinics (Life Long), Berkeley Free Clinic and West Oakland Health Clinic
Provided County funding for the Berkeley Battered Women's Shelter and the Berkeley Rape Crisis Center run by Bay Area Women Against Rape (BAWAR), Berkeley/Oakland Support Services (BOSS) to assist women and children facing homelessness.
Provided County funding for the Pacific Center - one of the first lesbian and gay government funded service centers in the nation.
Worked to establish mental health services at Bonita House and Berkeley Place so that people could be served in a community setting.
Led the effort to fund the Berkeley Center for Independent Living (CIL) and later wrote State Legislation to expand CIL all over the State of California making it the model for Senator Alan Cranston's federal legislation which took the concept nationwide.
Championed childcare issues -- Tom worked closely with Bananas, providing County funding to help them give information and referrals to families seeking quality childcare. Tom, later used the Bananas model, to author legislation which established a Statewide system of childcare information and referral centers.
One of Tom's most important contributions to children's health was his leadership in the passage of an initiative to add fluoride to the East Bay's drinking water. The result has been a dramatic drop in children's dental problems.
Provided County funding for Berkeley Youth Alternatives for services to trouble teenagers, the Creative Growth Center, an innovative art therapy for developmental children, and the Neighborhood Arts Project, now know as Pro Arts, which assists artists of all disciplines.

Thanks for the Micki PDF's. I am going to work, even though it's after Halloween.
?I didn?t have to travel to the Congo to see the heart of darkness,? said Weinberg who managed 39 percent of the vote in a surprisingly nasty race against Councilmember Kriss Worthington in the 7th Distric
It was nice to see Dean get her butt kicked in the election, there's no doubt about it.
But it's funny to read a glowing defense of Bates by someone signing their post 'anarchist'.
The fact is that Tom Bates is pretty much a business-as-usual liberal.
The irony is that Dean tended to trigger such a back-lash that it gummed up the normal workings of pro-business governance. That's why that pro-business rag, the SF Chronicle, supported Bates!
