Computers for Ecuador are being assembled in Oakland.
Folks are needed to help assemble about 300 pcs and macs to ship to Ecuador. The Location is ACCRC, 5725 International Blvd, Oakland. This is short bus ride from Fruitvale Bart. By car take High St. Exit from 880.
I spent some time today at Alameda County Computer Resource Center to learn more about the computers to Ecuador IMC project. I did a video interview with Evan, who is organizing this project.
Basically, about 300 pentium 100-300 mhz computers are being prepared to ship to the Ecuador IMC. From there they will distributed throughout Latin America.
Evan is also working on getting equipment donations for a wireless net in quito, ecuador to connect activist groups to a high speed internet connection operated by a non-profit ISP.
ACCRC turns out to be really cool. They helped with computers for the Ruckus Tech workshop, are providing all these computers for Latin American progressives, and provide space for a Low Power FM station broadcasting to East Oakland on 93.7 and the world at http://www.koox.net.
Mostly they provide computers to local non-profits and schools.
They provide jobs and training for folks to learn about computers.
They recycle, one way or another, just about every scrap material that comes to them.

The link leads to a longer project description and estimated budget. The total cost of getting hundreds of computers into people's hands is estimated to be less than $6k! If a traditional NGO had done this it would be many, many times that cost .

There is also a team of Portland indymedia folks working at Free Geek.
they have been working long hours with little food and water and have so far built 65 computers for the project.
funding is needed to get the computers to the bay area and to get a geek or two to ecuador to help set up these machines.
contact Jeff for more info.

BTW: Freegeek rocks and has been a tremendous help to the portland side of the project.
freegeek is the portland computer recycling/community computer center. They give away linux boxes in exchange for 24hours of service. Service includes learning about how to test and assemble computers.
Thanks Free Geek!!!!

Hey, this is Guy Berliner here from SDIMC. Just want to say that I'm very inspired by this wonderful work you all are doing. This is the kind of the thing I need to hear about these days to lift my spirits. Goodness knows the rest of what one reads these days is so goddam dreary it's enough to make you sometimes just want to throw in the towel. But just to know that there are bighearted folks like you doing yeoman's work like this, hell, it brings tears to the eyes... And I mean that sincerely and in a good way.
You all rock!

If you are not familiar with IndyMedia, it is an extreme leftist "news" organization that is essentially committed to the destruction of America. Basically it blaims all of the world's problems on America and glorifies terrorism, like Yassir Arrifat and Osama bin Laden. It has suggested that President Bush is responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It is extremely anti-semetic (to the point of being Nazist) and consistently attacks Israel.
If you want to cut a check to these people, be my guest, but you should at least know what your money is going to support.
