Amazing event at Stanford

by Peter Maiden (pmaiden [at] pacbell.net)
Demonstration and counter-demonstration merged.

The oval at the end of Palm Drive at Stanford University was the location for a demonstration at noon on Friday, April 19 in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle. About one hundred fifty demonstrators attended, as did over two hundred counter-demonstrators in solidarity with Israel. Stanford officials insisted the two demonstrations take place on opposite sides of a path. Towards the end of the event Rabbi Michael Lerner spoke criticizing the Israeli regime. He also criticized the Palestinian Authority for the use of violence without negotiation. Many counter-demonstrators booed Lerner before he spoke. But after a while, elements in the counter-demonstration began to applaud the rabbi. A short while later, as the event came to a close, someone spoke on the mike asking the demonstrators on both sides not to replicate the conflict, but to join and sing together for peace. The two demonstrations then merged and Israeli and Palestinian flags flew side by side. In the photo are two Stanford dorm mates, Jared Cohen (on left) and Tarek Hammam (on right). They were on opposite sides of the demonstrations until they found each other afterwards and waved their flags together.

That's really great!

If this is true, Arafat *and* Sharon could learn a thing or two from these kids.

This is not a conflict where the two parties can kiss and make up. Israel's root, Zionism, has always been comprised of racism, hatred, and genocidal intentions. Any attempts to put a friendly face on the monstrosity of Israel will go the way of Oslo--towards another Intifada, and protracted unrest in the region.

Shame on the Palestinians who would forsake justice for temporary peace with these fascists. Marching with the Israeli flag is marching with the Nazi flag.

I wasn't trying to be a smart ass in this case, was just curious and trying to be conversational.

It seems Yasuhiro Nakasone might've coined the phrase, when describing Japan as a US outpost. I recall seeing Kissinger quoted as having said as much about Israel in a forum somewhere (maybe one of the Indymedia newswires), but wasn't able to find a related Kissinger quote with a search engine (although it's possible he said something to that effect, even though I wasn't able to locate it with a quick search).

Let me tell you what we call people like this in Palestine: collaborators

You do not stand with the Israeli flag as if it is the same as standing with the Palestinian flag

One stands for oppression and colonialism

The other stands for self-determination denied

These students dont realize what they are talking about

Well, one thing you don't realize is that these students are Americans and will have to live with each other regardless of what happens in occupied Palestine. I realize the life expectancy of a snitch is measured in minutes, but this system of calling out people as collaborators is an unjust and brutal path. It is wrong to murder, like the palestinians are doing, collaborators with Israel. You will find no support amongst American pro-palestinian activists for any calls for death or even punishment for two young people trying to come together over an issue adults have hoisted upon them. But do what you think is right. Like the christians say, "What Would Jesus (Muhammed) Do?". And remember that every death you call for is a death that will haunt you and your legacy forever.

Knee cap them.

Right on! This is totally dope. We need more of this: people coming together on the conflict instead of allowing the extremists to pull them apart. In the end, both flags will fly proudly side-by-side. How many people have to die before we get there?

We need the doves front and center, with hatred to the sidelines.

Maybe you - like extremists among the Israelis, who you so despise - are part of the reason your peoples are shredding each other with bullets instead of living together in peace.

Your words strongly remind me of the words of Jewish extremists here: both of you call murder "justice."
