I attended both the pro-Israel rally last Sunday in Justin Herman Plaza and the “Protest against War, Racism and Poverty” pro-Palestinian rally this Saturday. I was encouraged to see and hear the abundance of people at each that espoused peace. But at the same time, the speakers at each were very selective about what facts they shared with the crowd and did not seem to want to take a balanced approach to achieve peace.

It would be naïve to say that 100% or even close on either side want peaceful coexistence, either in the region or around the world. Sharon, no. Hamas, certainly not. Arafat, my jury is still out. There has been an outbreak of anti-semetic attacks worldwide since the offensive. So why do we even try to make things black and white? At the pro-Israel rally, there were a couple people with signs equating Arafat to Hitler. At the pro-Palestinian one, there were signs equating Sharon (or even all of Israel) to the Nazis. Obviously they can’t both be right, and in my opinion they are both overly-dramatic. But in any case, how will these signs help find peace? They will only incite.

Some people at the Palestinian rally had signs about ending US military aid to Israel, which seems like a reasonable political response. It is my understanding that the US also gives aid to the Palestinians. Should that be ended as well? Why wasn’t the issue raised of Saddam Hussain offering money to suicide bombers’ families? Or Iran shipping arms? That “aid” certainly doesn’t help peace.

Why is it so taboo to say that both sides are at fault? Just because one side is wrong, doesn’t make the other one right, whichever way you lean. Like him or not, which I normally don’t, President Bush is the only public figure I have heard lay responsibility on both sides. That’s the only way a peaceful settlement will arise. You cannot condemn violence on one side and condone it on the other.

It’s important to me to believe that being pro-Israel does not have to mean anti-Palestinian, and vice versa. I got a much stronger vibe about that at the Israel rally as opposed to the Palestinian one. In Dolores Park, I saw everything from Jews for Justice to people burning the Israeli flag, and I’m sure everyone on that spectrum didn’t want the same end result. It’s great to be active and to be against something, such as the occupation; but it also must matter what you are FOR instead. The Israeli rally had a much more united and clear agenda, for peacefully coexisting Jewish and Palestinian states.

I am Jewish, so I won’t claim to be unbiased. But I strive to be as objective as possible, which is more than most people at these demonstrations. Ask my friends, and they will probably tell you I am the most liberal, progressive Jew they know. I have attended rallies in Washington DC against police brutality and the bombing in Kosovo; on the eve of the WTO meetings in Seattle in 1999, I was at an anti-globalization rally at the Federal Reserve Bank in Boston; I am a member of the Green Party. But I think the Israel-Palestinian issue is too complex with too much history to throw into the same barrel as those topics.

I would like to clarify between being anti-Sharon vs anti-Israel. This conflict didn’t start with Sharon taking office or the recent Israeli offensive. There have been many Israeli leaders before, with suicide bombings and small Israeli incursions occurring for years. Why wasn’t there such massive support for the Palestinian cause prior? I think liberal people are just getting swept up in a movement, as often happens (I have for other issues) because of the intensified violence. For all the horrific losses on both sides that have resulted, at least it has brought people’s attention to the issue, so a real attempt at a solution can be made.

Sharon didn’t become the leader by chance either. He is a reactionary result of the Israeli people getting frustrated by more peaceful leaders not being able to seal the deal with Arafat. Just 2 years ago, Barak seemed to be on the verge at Camp David, but Arafat declined. If so many people claim that the occupation justifies violent resistance, I think it’s comparable to say that that failure led the Israeli people to react and call for more hawkish means of resolution.

I have never heard a good answer for why Arafat did reject that agreement. Sure, it didn’t give him everything he was looking for. But there must be some room for compromise. Certainly the situation for his people would have been better under those terms than currently, no? Either he has very poor foresight for a leader or he is willing to make an awful lot of human sacrifices for his own agenda.

My last take on the leadership of each side: at least the Israeli leaders are democratically elected. If the people don’t like how someone has performed, they replace him. It’s not hard to follow the will of the public through the elections. As for Arafat, I have no idea why or how he has been proclaimed the Palestinian leader for so long. There have been probably a dozen Israeli leaders in the time that Arafat has been “Chairman”. Obviously none of them have been able to break through with him. So at least some of the blame has to lie with him, being unable to work with anyone the Israelis offer. Maybe it’s time for someone new from that side.

The cries these days are for the “pre-1967” borders. That’s fine, but this whole thing didn’t start in 1967 anymore than it did with Sharon. Do you know why the 1967 borders exist? Because there was a war for the very existence of Israel. The surrounding Arab countries joined together to try to eliminate its existence. If they had won, do you think they would have given any “justice” to the surviving Israelis? Would you now be crying out for pre-1967 borders for the Israelis’ sake? No one slogan can capture the full essence of this deep conflict.

The media certainly doesn’t help either. I have never seen such subjective reporting on international affairs in mainstream newspapers in the US before. Normally a rally titled “Protest against War, Racism, and Poverty” would get minimal coverage, and all that would be noted was the violence and arrests, which are a small aspect. On the Chronicle’s website, this one is the top story, and it downplays any acts of violence. I hardly noticed any coverage of the Israeli rally last week. All I did see was it described as “support for the Israeli offensive”, which is totally off-base and offensive in itself. As for the Israeli and Palestinian media, I see no reason to take either at face value, even IndyMedia, which I highly cherish in general. For instance, in Jenin, the Palestinians call it massacre, the Israelis call it much less with booby traps and armed conflict. I am quite sure it was somewhere in between.

In closing, let me say that people who truly want peace will try to understand both sides. In the end, the real choosing of sides should be between those who are for peace and those who want war, not Israeli versus Palestinian. We in the US and around the world must be models of constructive dialog to find compromises and solutions. If we can’t speak face to face, as uninvolved parties, how can we expect those in the heat of the battle to do so? Justice demands honesty.

Its easy to talk about peace when you are holding a gun to someones head. Nature hates you war mongers and will dispense with you in her own way(cancer, alzheimer's, your own children may kill you for your money). Those of you who make it to old age will spend your last days alone in a rest home. Children of peace everywhere will prosper and lead productive lives, adding to our earth before we die. Hell is where you find it, and those who would impose hell on others will certainly find it themselves.

What good does protesting like this do?

It flies in the face of the corporate media and their 90% Bush approval rating BS. The fact that Michael Moore's book "Stupid White Men" has been #1 on the NY Times bestseller list for four weeks running should provide a clue that these polls are lies, but a massive demonstration such as yesterdays (representing millions of others who choose not to march) is proof positive that Bush's fascist policies are NOT universally accepted as many who get all their information from TV might be led to believe.

Another thing it accomplishes is that it makes those of us who do protest Bush's / Sharon's actions feel better that our voice is heard rather than just flopping around on the couch all day moaning. It boosts the morale of those who find the present state of the US in many ways unacceptable and may have thought themselves all alone on these feelings. You certainly are NOT alone. The majority of the country is progressive, but the political deck is stacked against us. When there is no other legitimate means of venting of political energy (and we know voting is not it), we take to the streets.

This is only the beginning. As Bush opens the front on multiple neo-Vietnams these protests will grow in size, number, and intensity.

The real Israeli agenda is to "peacefully coexist" with second class citizens, living in glorified ghettos.

I understand the following has no resources for you, I apologize for that, however ... for those of you who do not agree with the news coming from the so-called leftist independant reporters such as those from http://www.zmag.org, IMCs, etc. you can find them yourself by researching where I have gathered my information over the past year of observing the news by wading through such mainstream sites as http://www.bbc.com, http://www.cnn.com, http://www.arabworldnews.com, and by listening to National Public Radio(yes, it is a mainstream radio program ... like it or not)

With that said, I basically have some questions:

How can Israel be a democracy when it proclaims itself to be a "Jewish" State?

What would happen in the USA if white people could drive/commute on the best roads, while the majority of people of color are forced to create their own roads through rough terrains without proper equipment in order to go to work only to have these roads bombarded in order to make their lives even more difficult, as they must then walk many miles to make their livelyhoods and use carts to haul their supplies as has been and is the case in illegally occupied Palestinian territories?

If a white american person blew up the Oklahoma City Federal building killing many men, women and children, or sent mailbombs to random American corporate workers, would the United States start rounding up white male citizens without any hard evidence that they are guilty of committing such crimes or the possibility thereof, or of setting up checkpoints to ID the white citizens of this country whether they are suspect or not in order for them to go to work to feed their families?

Last year, after the Israel Tourism Minister was killed, Sharon demanded that Arafat start arresting Palestinian Militants. You can look throught he mainstream archives easily enough and find that after this demand the Palestinian Police started arresting Palestinian Militants. Soon after, a suicide bomber attacked Israel and Sharon responded by firing missiles at the Security Compound where Policeman were and where the arrested militants were being kept. Israel seems to want Arafat to reign in militants without a security force nor with a compound to do it. How do they expect Arafat to compromise while he and his police force are at the same time being violently hindered by the same people saying he's not doing enough?

How can the USA and Israel claim to want "global democracy" when they both refuse to adhere to International Law?

If your children saw Israeli tanks and soldiers roll in with USA weapons and helicopters killing you or other members of their family and bulldozing their houses over them while forcing everyone else to stay in their houses without adequate supplies and forcing aid workers to stay out(killing some of them), while the bodies, possibly of your friends and family, lie bloody and mangled, decaying outside .... would you not be yourself spiritually and mentally, if not physically wounded? Would you not want to grow up and help your oppressed and abused people fight for their freedom?

Is Sharon a man of peace as W. Bush has stated recently in the wake of this Israeli carnage of an already Israeli occupied territorie(s)?

Is it OK to be biased for peace? Is it OK to be biased for justice? Is it OK to biased for the oppressed? Is this not a responsibility of a true democracy to be biased for these things?

Should their be compromise for true democracy?

Shalom.

the good news: 25,000-plus people, from all races and walks of life, including the Palestinian community (a first, I believe, in an antiwar march), marching peacefully together

the bad news: I was pretty disappointed that the organizers allowed Palestinian cause to overtake the anti-war cause, which was the way it was billed and the reason I and a lot of people, especially out of towners, came. The huge Palestinian flag behind the stage at Dolores Park did not help matters. Not just the media, but the Palestinian community themselves, mistook this for a "pro-Palestinian" march. The DC march came across as being for many causes, with the global war at the forefront, as it should be. I think the SF march's emphasis was a big mistake. If IAC organizes the next one, I will be at the meetings early on pushing hard for the antiwar/peace focus. Everything else is related but secondary right now.

Brett Feldman in his pompous comments writes “Some people at the Palestinian rally had signs about ending US military aid to Israel, which seems like a reasonable political response. It is my understanding that the US also gives aid to the Palestinians. Should that be ended as well?”

Is Brett so stupid that he has no clue on the answer, or does he know the facts and simply lies of us with his propaganda. Most people on the newswire know that most of the $100,000,000 in our taxes that have gone to Israel is for military use. Also most people know that of the very small amount that has gone to the Palestinian includes no Military aid. Crawl back in your hole Brett and don’t bother calling yourself Jewish, you are an embarrassment to all progressive Jews

Regarding protest. Many idiots, warmongers and racist to not like peace protests. We can just forget about that kind of scum. Everyone should know that slavery and the burning of witches was once the majority view. Without protest stuff like that would never change.

It takes guts to protest when you are nearly alone on any issues. However, it takes no guts or brains to go along with a 90% majority.

"What does this accomplish?"
"Can't you see [the oppressors] are [the justified]?"

You think what you want; express yourself at will, but remember posting to a list just to fuck with people who're rising up is less effective than getting out in the public eye with everyone you know and raising your voice. Screaming that pooling all the work of a population for extermination of the rest of humanity (while the conductors of global genocide languish in boundless, riduculous luxury produced by the servant classes) is NOT OKAY. Who knows what your views are; you were too cool (or too informed by the murdering classes and their subservient mainstream media) to get out there.

When was the last time you refused to pay taxes, rent, to serve in the military, or even to purchase transnational corporate products billions of other people buy every day? "What difference does this make," indeed. Have a coke and a smile and play some more video games. Post again when you've determined the brilliant solution to mass suffering so we can all share in the only evident way forward.

If you've read this far, you realize this is counterpropaganda not actually intended for your simpleton eyes and mind. It's for all those people who attended yesterday's march and rally or any of the anti-war marches and rallies since Operation Desert Shield. Every hour you spend in those streets and on the lawns of government buildings you're not out contributing to the capitalist machine that uses our blood to build homes and armies for the morally bankrupt, ruthless wealthy.

The more people feel motivated to flood the streets, the more people will consider moving to the next level--at the homes of corporate executives, politicians, police and military leaders to ask them why the system fails to serve its participants and when we can expect their basic needs to again be met.

Keep posting idiotic support for oppressive governments, corporations and wealthy individuals. People will see through your jaded self-service, that you're selling out for your piece of the murder and corruption pie, more and more as time progresses.

Thank you A20 participants, organizers and the Independent Media Centers everywhere.

"Most people on the newswire know that most of the $100,000,000 in our taxes that have gone to Israel is for military use. Also most people know that of the very small amount that has gone to the Palestinian includes no Military aid."

I'm pretty sure the poster here inadvertently made a slip, because, for the record, the amount the US has given to Israel since 1948 is just shy of $100,000,000,000. In recent years, the US has begun to give Palestine aid - under a tenth of what it gives Israel, and no military aid as has been pointed out. The gesture seems to be mainly proffered so that the pro-Israel lobby can go around saying - "yes, but the US gives Palestine aid too...."
by hane
I'm not pro-Israel or pro-Palestine. If I don't like huge armies with F-16s, tanks and guns slaughering mostly defenseless civilians am I anti-Semitic? If my tax dollars help fund that death and destruction don't I have a right to voice my disagreement? I attended the rallly and felt my time well-spent even though I had to travel by bus for 6 hours only to arrive at 6:30 a.m. for a full day of protest and marching then back on the bus for 7 hours. I am so grateful to the organizers of these events. The rally was 40,000 give or take 5,000 and many, many groups were represented. I attended because I wanted to send a message to the world that there are some Americans that are aware of the truth behind the lies we're told by our media. This was a loving, wonderful group of people, the cops were great and I'm so proud of each and every one of us!! Cowardly moronic comments through email are quite pathetic.

The massive rally is the witness to the anger and desperation against AMERICAN POLICIES in mideast and all over the world. I participated in this rally, and witnessed people from ALL WALKS OF LIFE. Americans, ARABS (from all over MIDEAST), INDIANS, PAKISTANIS, African Americans (thanks to their brilliant march), Puerto Ricans, Philipinos, few jewish people (with banners -"no war"), all with one goal - SUPPORT/SOLIDARITY FOR PALESTINIAN PEOPLE. Its time now for the REVOLUTION in USA, against the governments HYPOCRITICAL stances/policies.

May almighty help the besieged people of palestine.. Amen. They are firm and shall fight till they get what they want. The world community is with PALESTINIAN people.
by Jay Mosby
Jews can post lies about how Israel offered the Palestinians "such a deal” before butcher Sharon but you know what? No one really gives a damn about more Jew lies. The finer points about Jew genocide against each and every Arab state in the Middle East no longer matters to Americans who have finally awoken.

Americans, who are not Jews or right wing Christian evangelical nut cases, are too busy planning to defend our land and our lives right here in the United States against the continued onslaught of world Jewry. And for those American Jews who have humanely tried to do right and have supported the lost cause for peace in the Middle East, I say to you:

We don't want you and we don't need you in our movement. No one needs Jews to co-opt our movement by pretending to speak out against Israel. The cause is not Israel, it is the Jew. And, as chronicled in history for the last 3,000 years, when the shit starts flying, no one needs another greedy heartless Jew who will work only for world Jewry. The Jews have been thrown out of every major city and country of the Middle East, Europe, England, North Africa, and even Japan, in the last 3,000 years…several times! If the period between 1945 and 2002 has taught non Jews in the world anything, it is that Jews can never become productive, sharing humane citizens of planet earth and peaceable coexist with non Jews. The entire world now knows the real problem is not just about Israel's 54 years of genocide against Arabs in the Middle East, it IS about the Jew, and it has always been about the eternal Jew.

The world must stop using the euphemism "Israel" when we really mean simply the Jew. If world Jewry’s lies deceit, distortion and support for slaughter and torture of innocents has taught us one thing, it is that Israel does nothing. The Jew does it all.

Keep your racist shit off this site Jay Mosby.
by Boo hoo!
Regarding the raving anti-semitic attack by Jay Mosby: shoot yourself. The anti-war movement does not need to be burdened with your anti-semitic baggage.

I agreed with the author of the comment that it was wonderful to see so many people out supporting the anti-war movement. It was a shame it had to turn into a giant pro-Palestinian march, even though most people there probably sympathized with their cause.
This was a major turnoff for many people I talked to who went to the rally. It was advertised as an anti-war march.

I was involved in some of the planning, and this agenda was on the table early on. Despite certain people asking to make the anti-war march focus on other issues (like the war in Afghanistan and the new one in Iraq), it became apparent that the Palestinian issue was going to be the focus. This is mainly because it fit so neatly into the model of anti-colonialism that the Left loves to trumpet. This had little to do with the Palestinians and more to do with a desire for world socialist revolution planned behind closed doors and marketed to the masses as an anti-war movement. Yes, let's be careful about building an anti-war movement as extremists on the left are just as lousy as extremists on the right.

I won't be going to any more fake "peace" marches.

While I sympathize with the plight of the Palestinans, I was somewhat dismayed at the change in the primary theme of the San Francisco rally. I attended because I wanted to support the protest against any further conduct of the so-called "War on Terrorism." However, I was dismayed by the strong emphasis on the Palestinian / Israeli conflict instead. I realize that due to the gravity of the immediate situation it was important to address this issue. However, I wish the leaders of the rally had managed to keep the basic theme on track. While we should strongly encourage and influence both sides to find peaceful solutions, getting the Administration to understand that there is a sizable opposition to his spreading the War on Terrorism any further is of even more importance to the world as a whole.

Also, I realize that in situations such as that in Palestine, there will always be those given to extreme remarks and actions, I was neverthless disturbed by signs equating the swastika with the Star of David as well as some of the rhetoric with the same tone. I hasten to add that I am not at all a religious person but do respect the rights of others who are.

I must say I was moved at seeing the faces of some of the Palestinains, especially the women, as they recognized the overwhelming support they were finally receiving on these shores.

I understand the Washington DC rally stuck more with the program. I just hope that President Bush et al got the message that opposition to his policies is strong and will get stronger the further he pursues them.

Somehow I doubt it however.

Hacked
by Victum • Monday April 22, 2002 at 11:24 PM

Hacker invaded my computer, looked at my porn, stole my identitty and made me bankrupt. All because I dared to diagree with the all mighty SF-IMC. They erased all my articles, destroyed my computer and wiped me out financially. Talk about Fascist Dictators.

It doesn't pay to disagree with SF-IMC.

Trust ME.....I've learned my lesson.

Behind the scenes? Its all out in the open for everyone to see.

Furthermore, while a number of people have taken up the invitation to join the chat, you are still hiding out and refuse to come on there.

Now who is "behind the scenes"? Haha, and yes, that's right, I can spell "scene" correctly....

coward!!
by They wiped-out my computer and killed my dog
They broke down my door, killed my dog and looked at my porn. All because I challenged them. I'm still hancuffed.
