(San Francisco, CA) The 2027 California Black Veterans Summit, scheduled for February 6–8, 2027, at our California State Capitol, in Sacramento, stands as a landmark occasion commemorating the 160th Anniversary of the Buffalo Soldiers. This historic gathering pays tribute to the African American regiments whose courage, discipline, and civic duty helped shape both the United States and the Golden State.
Summer of 1903 the Buffalo Soldiers, on horseback, left the Presidio of San Francisco toward the Sierra Nevada. Arriving at Yosemite, Grants Pass and Sequioa National Parks serving as Park Rangers remains foundational to California’s identity and its enduring commitment to equality and public service, the legacy soon come alive as our California Buffalo Soldiers Heritage Trail.
The Summit will convene veterans, historians, policymakers, and community leaders to advance recognition and access for Black veterans while preserving the legacy of those who paved the way. Through dialogue and collaboration, participants will explore strategies to strengthen veteran support systems and expand opportunities for future generations.
Program focus areas include housing and homelessness prevention, employment and workforce development, healthcare and mental wellness, and education and GI Bill benefits. These pillars reflect the ongoing mission to ensure that every veteran receives the respect, resources, and representation earned through service.
Partnering organizations such as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet), American Legion, VFW, Veterans Service Organizations and Black veteran heritage institutions will help guide this effort. Together, we reaffirm California’s role in honoring the past while building a more equitable future.
The 2027 California Black Veterans Summit is more than an event, it is a call action for remembrance and renewal, ensuring that the valor of the Buffalo Soldiers continues to inspire civic leadership and unity across generations.
