Launching Black Onions, a list of anarchist and anti-authoritarian onion websites

by Black Onions (blackonions [at] riseup.net)
We are pleased to announce the launch of Black Onions, a new initiative meant to provide a stable and regularly updated list of anarchist and anti-authoritarian onion websites. Onion websites are websites accessible using Tor Browser through addresses ending in ".onion".

We are pleased to announce the launch of Black Onions, a new initiative meant to provide a stable and regularly updated list of anarchist and anti-authoritarian onion websites. Onion websites are websites accessible using Tor Browser through addresses ending in ".onion".

In the past months, governments have targeted our movements' communication infrastructures with renewed vigor, as demonstrated by the international conference on "far-left terror" held in the United States in July, and the placement of radical Italian hosting provider Autistici/Inventati on a terrorism sanctions list at the end of August.

For better or worse, much of our movements' public communication takes place on the Internet, leaving it vulnerable to technological means of censorship. Compared to traditional websites, onion websites are less vulnerable to censorship because they do not use domain names, and they allow anonymizing the location of a website's server, equivalent to how Tor Browser anonymizes your location when you visit the website. We believe onion websites are our best option for continuing to communicate online within the anarchist movement, especially if censorship attempts were to increase in the future.

The recurring issue with onion websites has been that their addresses, made up of 56 random characters, are impossible to remember. Black Onions aims to solve this issue. We encourage you to keep the onion addresses you use regularly in your Tor Browser bookmarks or in a file on your computer, but if you need an address that you haven't saved somewhere, come find it on Black Onions!

Access Black Onions through any of the following addresses:

To establish a baseline of trust in this new initiative, the following anarchist projects have vouched for us in PGP-signed statements: Act For Freedom Now!, counter-information project active since 2008 (see their vouch) and the No Trace Project, anti-repression project active since 2021 (see their vouch).

Use onion websites! Resist censorship!
