Introduction

Buddha under the Bodhi tree depicts the defining moment in the life of Siddhartha Gautama, when he attained enlightenment at Bodhgaya and became the Buddha, the Awakened One. Seated in deep meditation beneath the spreading branches of the Bodhi tree, he represents peace, wisdom and the end of suffering.Idol Brass offers devotional art that carries this tradition forward.

For devotees, meditators and art lovers alike, the seated Buddha is a lasting symbol of inner stillness and compassion.

1. Who Is Buddha Under the Bodhi Tree and What Does the Form Represent?
Siddhartha Gautama was born a prince in Lumbini, in a Shakya royal family. The Bodhi tree form shows him after years of seeking truth, seated in the lotus posture with eyes lowered in meditation. The right hand often touches the earth in the Bhumisparsha mudra, calling the earth to witness his awakening. A serene face, long earlobes and the ushnisha on the head are classic features of Buddha images.

2. The Story of the Great Renunciation
At twenty nine, Siddhartha left his palace after seeing an old man, a sick person and a funeral procession, which made him question the nature of suffering. He gave up royal life and spent years practising severe austerity. Realising that extreme self denial brought no clarity, he chose the Middle Path, a balanced way between indulgence and harsh discipline. This choice prepared him for his final meditation at Bodhgaya.

3. The Night of Enlightenment
Siddhartha vowed to remain seated beneath the Bodhi tree until he found the truth. Tradition describes how Mara, the tempter, sent fear, desire and doubt to disturb him, yet he stayed steady and calm. At dawn, he attained complete awakening and understood the Four Noble Truths: that suffering exists, that it has a cause, that it can end, and that the Eightfold Path leads to its end.

4. Bodhgaya and the Bodhi Tree
Bodhgaya in Bihar is among the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Mahabodhi Temple stands beside a Bodhi tree, a fig species known as Ficus religiosa, which is regarded as a descendant of the original tree. Emperor Ashoka is remembered for promoting Buddhism and sending a sapling of the tree to Sri Lanka with his daughter Sanghamitta. The tree remains a living link to the enlightenment.

5. Buddha Purnima and the Buddhist Tradition
Buddha Purnima, celebrated on the full moon of the Vaisakha month, marks the birth, enlightenment and passing of the Buddha. Pilgrims gather at Bodhgaya, Lumbini and Sarnath to meditate, chant and offer lamps. Sarnath is where he gave his first teaching. Buddhism later spread across Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia, China, Tibet and Japan, shaping art, philosophy and meditation traditions worldwide.

Conclusion
Buddha under the Bodhi tree remains a timeless picture of awakening, patience and compassion. Through teachings, pilgrimage and art, his message of the Middle Path continues to inspire people across cultures.
